PROOF OF POT SMOKING IN ANCIENT CHINA
An international team of archaeologists in western China has unearthed the oldest evidence of prehistoric cannabis consumption. Chemical testing of several unearthed artifacts suggests ritualistic weed smoking occurred at least 2,500 years ago. Their analysis also found that ancient cannabis plants contained a high level of psychoactive compounds never before seen at an archeological site. Cannabis use has a long history in East Asia as one of the continent’s oldest cultivated crops. Previous digs uncovered plant fossils and seeds in the same region from the same time period, but physical evidence of smoking in ancient cultures has been limited until now. Archaeologists exhumed 10 wooden bowls which contained soot-covered stones. Analyzing the samples using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, their tests showed an exact match with cannabis and a high amount of residual tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – the chemical intoxicant in the plant.
