NYC TO REQUIRE FOOD SALT WARNING
The New York City Board of Health voted unanimously Wednesday to require food chain restaurants to put salt-shaker symbols on menus to denote dishes with more than the recommended daily limit of 2,300 milligrams of sodium. That’s about a teaspoon. New York is the first U.S. city with such a requirement, which comes as officials and experts urge Americans to eat healthier. Public health advocates applaud the proposal, but salt producers and restaurateurs call it a misguided step toward an onslaught of confusing warnings. Lori Roman, president of the Salt Institute, complains, “This is another example of the government creating policy based on outdated, incorrect sodium guidelines.” Some examples of sodium in chain restaurant food;
– Panera Bread Smokehouse Turkey Panini (2,590 mg)
– TGI Friday’s sesame jack chicken strips (2,700 mg)
– Applebee’s Grilled Shrimp ‘n Spinach Salad (2,990 mg)
– Subway footlong spicy Italian sub (2,980 mg)
* Yikes! You could practically clear an icy sidewalk by throwing fast food on it.
* The Salt Institute? Where’s their campus – Shaker Heights, Ohio?
* It’s called “The Salt Institute” because “The Foundation for High Blood Pressure” didn’t sound so good.
* “An onslaught of confusing warnings” because the picture of a salt shaker is so ambiguous.
* How about if the salt shaker was laying in a little coffin?
* How about changing it to a picture of an aorta exploding?
* Good work. This will make New York incredibly safe.
* One thing’s for sure: Subway would much rather talk about this than Jared.
* Nice move but too bad government isn’t better at government things.
* I bet the head of the Salt Institute used some salty language when she first heard about this.
* You know the weird thing? All these health warnings are starting to work. Ask McDonald’s.
