MOTHER-IN-LAW WANTS TO CHARGE FAMILY FOR XMAS DINNER
A British woman posted on a discussion board that her mother-in-law is charging guests for Christmas lunch. The woman with the user name Staceyjas wrote on the Mumsnet website that her mother-in-law has invited family for a Christmas dinner, but is asking that everyone pay £17 ($21.66) to cover the cost of the food. Staceyjas says she can see it from both sides because preparing a big dinner is hard work and can be expensive, but “it’s not like she is financially destitute.” The writer asked for other people’s opinions. Responses were mixed:
– “If you can’t afford it, don’t invite people. Or only cook what you can afford. I’d never charge anyone, far less family, for dinner.”
– “Cannot think of anything less hospitable than setting the menu and demanding your guests pay for it.”
– “Based on how much Christmas costs us I’d say that was a good deal!”
* I’d pay, but I’d expect a nice floor show.
* Are there door prizes?
* Charging money for British food? That takes a lot of nerve.
* What do you tip your ol’ mom for something like that?
* How’d she come up with £17? Not 15? Not 20?
* It’s also £2 to use the loo.
* PHONE TOPIC: Is it fair to charge family when you invite them for dinner?
