KELLOGG'S GETTING CEREAL INTO THE PRODUCE AISLE
If you’re a shopper at any of the midwest’s Meijer supermarkets, you’ might have seen a new trend – a tower of cereal boxes from Kellogg’s sitting in the produce section. Why? According to the industry publication Food Dive, Kellogg’s believes it can benefit from the better-for-you vibe of products placed along the perimeter of the grocery store. In other words, Kellogg’s is trying to get you to equate apples and grapes and beans and kale with Frosted Flakes. It has been pointed out that a serving of Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes contains 10 grams of sugar while Frosted Mini-Wheats deliver 11 grams – the rough sugar equivalent of three Oreo cookies. Several other Kellogg’s offerings, including Froot Loops and Honey Smacks, contain even more. The placement is a sign of a new competition for more shelf space in the produce section. In most stores, the “better-for-you” food appears around the perimeter of the store, and the less healthy foods are placed in the middle.
* They’re not actual Loops of Fruit, are they?
* I’ve got a better idea. Put an actual apple in the box of cereal.
* Kellogg’s? More like KILL-ogg’s!
* Frosted Flakes next to produce? That idea is not GrrrreAT!!!
* At my supermarket, sodas and ice cream are smack dab in the middle – Ground Zero.
* Wait, before we continue, what’s kale?
* By “the better-for-you vibe” I think they mean “actual food compared to the industrial waste in the center of the stores.”
* Hey, you think that’s a little strong? Read a label. There’s more chemicals in that stuff than in Lamar Odom.
* That’s why they print the labels in a microscopic font so it’s impossible to read.
* I wish they wouldn’t bring up the sugar levels in Oreo cookies. I’ve got my body convinced that Oreo cookies are vitamins.
