JAPANESE CASTAWAY FORCED OFF HIS ISLAND
A Japanese man who lived as a castaway on a deserted island for almost 30 years has been removed from his home after becoming the longest lasting voluntary castaway alive. Masafumi Nagasaki, now 82, arrived on the remote island of Sotobanari, on the Yaeyama Islands, an archipelago south of Japan, in 1989. The island is one of the few that remain deserted in Japan. Even fisherman rarely stop on the island. Nagasaki was among the few voluntary castaways who have spent decades on a deserted island. There are no phones on Nagasaki’s island. No lighters. No fresh water, no boats, no light, no motor cars – not a single luxury. Also, not many clothes either. Mr. Nagasaki lived naked. Nagasaki’s only wish was to die on the island he called home for the last three decades. “Finding a place to die is an important thing to do, and I’ve decided here is the place for me,” he told Reuters in 2012. “It hadn’t really occurred to me before how important it is to choose the place of your death, like whether it’s in a hospital or at home with family by your side. But to die here, surrounded by nature – you just can’t beat it, can you? I want to be killed by a typhoon so nobody can try to save me. To die here is the best, it’s just perfect for me.” But authorities have removed him and returned him back to civilization after someone saw him on the island and it seemed like he was weak. They won’t allow him to return. Since being removed, Nagasaki is now living in the nearest city to the island, Ishigaki, 37 miles away in a government house.
* He wanted to die there, but they took him away because he looked like he might die there. Nice job.
* He’s going to spend his remaining days trying to find the person who ratted him out.
* After 30 years of living naked, Mr. Nagasaki in now know as Mr. Naga-saggy.
* They showed him the movie “Cast Away”, and he said, “That guy had a VOLLEYBALL??? Luxury!”
* He also said, “Well, at least I left civilization in 1989 knowing that the Star Wars movies were over and they wouldn’t ruin it by making any more.”
