HIGH SCHOOL KID BREAKS PULLUP RECORD
Seventeen-year-old Langley High School junior Andrew Shapiro crushed three Guinness world records over the weekend when he performed 7,306 pullups in record time. Shapiro, a fan of the American Ninja Warrior obstacle course TV show, was inspired by his father’s five-year battle with colon cancer, so he practiced incessant pull-ups with the aim of setting three world records in the Relay for Life event in Fairfax County, Virginia. Early on Saturday at 8 am, he began his pull-up marathon. After six hours he had completed 3,515 pull-ups – a new world record. At twelve hours, he had finished 5,742 pull-ups – another world record. Then he set his sights on the ultimate record – the most pull-ups performed in 24 hours. The record was 6,800 by Czech athlete Jan Kares in 2015. At the 15-hour mark, Shapiro came to a halt, having put his chin above the bar 7,306 times.
* Come on, dude, you still had nine hours.
* I’m not sure how this helps his dad with the cancer, but whatever.
* That’s nice. Your dad’s got cancer so you show off how healthy you are.
* I guess this will come in handy if he’s ever, like, hanging by his hands off the edge of a cliff.
* So now, Czech athlete Jan Kares’ name will just fall by the wayside, never to be remembered.
* That Czech athlete Jan Kares is crushed but I told him to keep his chin up.
* Practicing for a pull-up marathon! That excuse would have save me a LOT of embarrassment growing up.
* I guess we’re all supposed to be impressed but frankly, this sounds borderline nuts.
* Now, if it helps him get girls – well, that’s different.
* I did a chin-up once. It was 7th grade and my rib muscles are still healing.
* The only thing I pull up now is my pants after I use the john.
* You know who must have had a real disadvantage getting his chin over the bar? Jay Leno.
