GROCERY STORE OVERLOAD

In his book “Grocery: The Buying and Selling of Food in America,” author Michael Ruhlman points out that the sheer number of food items has grown 500 to 700% in the past two decades. As recently as the 1990’s, there used to be about 7,000 items in a supermarket; today, there are 40,000 to 50,000.
* Although it’s really hard to buy stuff from the eighth shelf up to the 30th shelf.
* Many of those 50,000 items are the different varieties of Lay’s Potato Chips.
* 3,000 of the items are just the impulse products lining the checkout aisle.
* Seven times more stuff to buy in the grocery store since 1990. 50% fewer cashiers.
