FACEBOOK “MEMORIES” PAGE BRINGS UP THINGS PEOPLE WOULD RATHER FORGET
Facebook has provoked a mass outpouring of sadness and regret after launching a new “Memories” page Monday. Facebook calls it a place to reflect on moments from the past, “including posts and photos, friends you’ve made, and major life events”. But it’s really reminding people of death, break-ups, lost friends and the highly embarrassing posts they wrote as a kid. Some of the reaction:
– One person said the new feature made her “wanna throw up from embarrassment”.
– Another said it “triggered” negative memories.
– Another: “If you didn’t already know how lame you used to be, Facebook Memories will never fail to remind you.”
– And: “Who benefits from Facebook memories of events that they’ve spent years suppressing?”
– “Thanks Facebook memories for reminding me why my ex is my ex. He took great pleasure in humiliating me at every opportunity just to get the laughs. I left that relationship feeling worthless and I’m still dealing with some of the damage caused.”
– “Facebook had to remind me of an angst-filled message I posted to my friends as I sat by my mother as she died during her hospice care 2 years ago. Didn’t really want to relive that moment.”
* Facebook Memories. Good times!
* Facebook tests these things out, right? They run them through a focus group or something? They have the money to do that, right?
* It’s all part of Facebook’s master plan to get more users to switch to Snapchat.
* It’s the Facebook version of your parents bringing out your photo album to show your prom date.
* PHONE TOPIC: What embarrassing memory from your past would you rather forget?
