CARNEGIE DELI TO CLOSE
New York’s famous Carnegie Deli, the iconic Manhattan restaurant, is closing after 80 years. The deli’s owner announced Friday that it would be shutting its doors at the end of 2016. Opened in 1937 just down the block from Carnegie Hall, the restaurant was frequented by celebrities and staffed by waiters effusing a kind of blunt New York charm as they served up typical Jewish fare like matzoh ball soup and knishes. The current owner, Marian Harper issued a statement saying, “As you may know, the restaurant business is one of the hardest jobs in New York City. At this stage of my life, the early morning to late night days have taken a toll, along with my sleepless nights, and grueling hours that come with operating a restaurant business in Manhattan. I’ve reached a time in my life when I need to take a step back.” The restaurant will remain open until its 40th anniversary in December. The Carnegie Deli was famous for the names of its sandwiches. Some of the actual items on the menu:
– Beef Encounter, $29.99
– Fifty Ways To Leave Your Liver, $24.99
– Carnegie Haul (h-a-u-l), $29.99
– Tongues For The Memory, $29.99
– Hamalot, $24.99
– My Fair Latkes, $15.99
* Now where will New Yorkers eat?!!
* Is that the Carnegie Deli menu or Bob’s Burgers I’m watching?
* Look, if I want to pay 30 bucks for a sandwich… well, I never want to pay 30 bucks for a sandwich.
* But if I DO want to pay 30 bucks for a sandwich, I’d go down to the sports arena.
* I haven’t seen prices that high since I had lunch in the airport.
* This is a harsh day for pastrami lovers everywhere.
* Oh well, New York still has the Statue of Liberty.
* What’s next? Turning Carnegie Hall into a disco?
