AUDIO: NEW COMPUTER CHIP SMELLS BODY ODOR

A Cambridge, England, company called Arm – which develops the hardware in smartphones – is working on a smart chip that can ‘smell’. The ‘e-nose’ is a a thin sheet of plastic film with built-in gas-sensing technology that identifies the dozens of gassy chemicals behind human odor and then ranks the, er, rank on a scale from one to five – so people know whether it is time to reapply their deodorant. The firm hopes the device may one day be built into clothes to monitor freshness throughout the day and could even be added to food packaging to check if produce has gone bad.
* So, what do I smell like, on a scale of sour milk to two-week-old Chinese food?
* One problem – it goes off if you stink, but it also goes off if you’ve just used Axe Body Spray.
* There’s only one explanation for an idea this dumb: One of the researchers at this Arm company must have a stinky coworker.
* “Reapply their deodorant”? Do they even know how deodorant works over there? Take a shower!
CLIP: They’re testing the body odor chip in France. Here’s what it sounds like.
