PARENTS ACCUSED OF SNEAKING GEOGRAPHY BEE ANSWERS TO KIDS
In Oak Brook, Illinois, parents in two families are accused of intentionally obtaining test questions leading up to this year’s National Geographic Bee so that their kids would have an advantage in the competition. Dr. Rahul Julka, a surgeon, allegedly had his wife, Komal, register as a home school provider. As such, she was able to purchase the questions that would be used in the early-round competitions of the National Geographic Bee. She also is accused of providing the email account and password to the second family, whose child participated in the bee. The Butler School District has banned Dr. Julka’s sons, ages 9 and 11, from all academic competitions while they remain in the district. The Julkas deny any wrongdoing, and Dr. Julka is appealing in court to remove the sanctions against his children and to eliminate the information “on their student records that may have an extremely negative impact on their future educational and professional lives.”
* See, kids? Per. Ma. Nent Record.
* If the Indian doctor is guilty of anything, it’s felony stereotyping.
* Rahul and Komal Julka deny any wrongdoing, so wherever they’re from, they’re fitting in nicely with American society.
* But isn’t education literally just learning answers to questions and spitting them back at the appropriate time? That’s what a Geography Bee is.
* Anyway, I submit “National Geographic Bee” for John Oliver’s “How is this still a thing?”
* I just wish my own parents cared this much.
* My parents got hung up teaching me the difference between right and wrong.
* Wait, anybody can purchase the answers to geography questions. It’s called a map.
* Isn’t this really an indictment of the contest’s security arrangements?
