TODAY IS …
(All days repeat annually on today’s date unless otherwise noted; days may or may not be called “National”/”International”/”World” depending on source; sources listed often have additional info. We generally do not list special days which were created by commercial companies for the purpose of marketing – including “holidays” created by the National Day Calendar and Wellcat websites to drive traffic to their websites – or the hundreds of disease awareness listings which occur each year. We present only those specially designated days we feel your listeners would find most interesting or significant.)

BIOLOGICAL CLOCK DAY
The Holiday Today website says this:
“Biological Clock Day serves as a reminder to tune into our body’s natural rhythms and prioritize our well-being. This day encourages us to reflect on the importance of our internal timekeepers, known as circadian rhythms, and how they influence various aspects of our health. Circadian rhythms are natural, internal processes that follow a roughly 24-hour cycle, influencing physical, mental, and behavioral changes in living organisms. In humans, circadian rhythms are regulated by light exposure. Disruptions such as irregular sleep schedules or exposure to artificial light at night, can lead to misaligned circadian rhythms, potentially resulting in sleep disorders, metabolic issues, and other health problems. Understanding and respecting our circadian rhythms can lead to better sleep quality, improved mental health, and a reduced risk of chronic diseases.”

GLOBAL PAY IT FORWARD DAY
The Days of the Year website says this:
“Pay It Forward Day got its start in 2000 when the idea was introduced by Blake Beattie, a student from Australia. By 2007, the day had made its way to the United States, working hard to bring the concept of paying it forward to the world at large. Paying it forward is what happens when something wonderful happens to you on the part of a stranger, and all they ask for in return is for you to pay it forward, to do something for someone when they need it in the future. Today over 80 countries are participating in this project, and there is a drive to reach over 10 million acts of kindness around the world.”

BOWEN YANG WANTS TO BE ABLE TO CURSE ON SNL

Comedian and Saturday Night Live cast member Bowen Yang would like there to be curse words on SNL. The actor welcomed former SNL player Amy Poehler to their podcast, during which Yang said that he’d like NBC’s Standards and Practices to let them push the language a bit further, saying, “We should be able to say at least five (s-words) and five (f-words) on SNL per season. We are so hampered in our comedy at SNL by not being able to say (the s-word) and (the f-word).” Amy Poehler countered, saying “I do think there’s something fun about not being able to say it that causes comedic tension that’s fun.”
* Sorry, Bowen, it’s not the f-word that’s going to make SNL funny.
* How has SNL struggled by for 50 years without cursing?
* There’s plenty of cursing during SNL. We’re always yelling at the TV, going, “Who the F— is writing this S—?”
* Broadcast television censorship standards. Isn’t that adorable?
* Have they never noticed that it’s always the cleanest or goofiest sketches that get the biggest laughs? “Cowbell”? Bill Hader’s “Stefon” character? Anything John Mulaney does? It’s the lack of curse words that makes it funny.

THE BUZZ

LOVE HANDLES

Reddit asked, “What do you call your partner other than their name?” Some of the responses:
– “We both call each other Janet. Neither of our names are Janet.”
– “Farm Boy. And he calls me Buttercup.”
– “I call her Doc cause she got her doctorate recently.”
– “Ni!! (Short for honey) It’s typically shouted like in Monty Python.”
– “I am called hummingbird.”
– “He’s stupid, I’m stupid head.”
– “Babercakes.”
– “Bave. We usually fat finger the b and v in our phones so we just went with bave.”
– “Boog. Short for booger bean.”
– “My husband calls me sweetness. I don’t think I’ve heard my actual name from him more than five times in nine years.”
– “In our house we are allowed to call each other anything except our names because that means we’re mad.”
* PHONE TOPIC: What cute little nickname do you call your partner?

U.S. NEWS

MAN ORDERS TEXAS ROADHOUSE DINNER FOR HIS GREAT DANE’S LAST MEAL

Last week, a Pennsylvania man ordered a Texas Roadhouse dinner as a last meal for his dog. Hunter Metzger knew his 8-year-old Great Dane, Iris, didn’t have much time left, and he wanted to make her last day special. So he went to Texas Roadhouse and ordered a rare 8 oz. New York Strip steak, steak fries, mashed potatoes and some fresh baked bread. He put a little note at the bottom of his order, indicating that the meal was the last meal for his dog. The Texas Roadhouse staff didn’t charge him for the food, and they wrote on the to-go box that it had been prepared with love. Afterwards, Metzger posted a picture on Facebook of Iris chowing down on her last supper and wrote, “We laid our sweet pup to rest last night.”
* Well, I certainly didn’t expect to be crying this morning.
* It was a meal to-go, in more ways than one.
* Steak fries? What is wrong with this guy? Doesn’t he know fried foods are bad for dogs, with lots of fat and salt that can lead to digestive issues, pancreatitis, and obesity?
* The timing must have been tricky, feeding her the food, then running the euthanasia procedure before the dog farts started.
* We all learned a valuable lesson today. How to get a free meal from Texas Roadhouse!

SNAKE DROPS FROM CEILING INTO WOMAN’S MARGARITA

In Sandston, Virginia, a woman had just finished her dinner at a Mexican restaurant when a snake dropped from the ceiling into her margarita. It happened back on April 16. Carletta Andrews said she’d just finished dinner on April 16 with her husband at Patron Mexican Restaurant when she felt something hit her forehead. When she turned around, she saw the snake in her margarita. It was a baby snake, and it started curling itself around her straw. While restaurant workers tried to remove the snake with a stick, another diner grabbed the snake and released it to the wild. Andrews said she is “scarred for life.”
* I’m sure the snake was thrilled, too.
* I think “scarred for life” means “There’s got to be some way I can sue them over this.”
* It didn’t help that the restaurant tried to pass it off as a tequila worm.
* Maybe the restaurant can start offering a new drink called serpentini.
* Snakes can crawl on ceilings now? When did that become a thing?

SCHOOL CLOSED ON ACCOUNT OF ANTS

In Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, an ant infestation at Lower Dauphin High School caused an early dismissal for students last week. Cafeteria workers found the ants swarming in the high school’s kitchen Wednesday — forcing the school to serve cold lunches in a different area of the school. Then on Thursday, because of a shortage of food supplies, officials were forced to dismiss students at 11 a.m.. An exterminator was brought in over the weekend, and classes were scheduled to resume Monday morning.
* Exterminator? So the ants got schooled.
* I’m sure the kids were thinking, “I thought ants were only attracted by real food, not the junk they serve in the cafeteria.”
* You know, there are people in poor countries who would be thrilled to have ants to eat, is what my father would say. And he did, too, because we had ants in the house.
* Time to teach the kids about the benefits of an insect-based diet.
* Coulda been worse. Coulda been murder hornets.

HELP WANTED: DOG BREATH SNIFFER

A Manhattan-based dog wellness brand called Spot & Tango is looking to hire a summer intern to help sniff and evaluate dog breath as it researches how well its new doggie “dental solution” works. According to the job listing, the perfect candidate needs to be “brave, bold, and nosy to get up close and personal with NYC’s finest canines.” The job entails conducting breath tests on random dogs around dog parks and maintaining highly detailed notes about what is smelled on the dog’s breath. The position pays $25 an hour with “unlimited puppy kisses.”
* They say if you do what you love, you’ve never work a day in your life.
* First thing you’d better be able to do is tell the front end from the back end.
* This is exactly the type of job that will be left after AI takes over everything else.
* Good luck trying to figure out how to jazz this up on your resume.
* Ever smell dog breath? They’d better have a couple of backup interns on deck.
* My wife would say, “I can get paid for what I have to face every morning?” And we don’t have a dog.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

LIFELONG LOTTERY PLAYER FINALLY WINS – THREE DAYS AFTER SHE DIED

In Aberdeen, Scotland, a woman who had played the lottery all her life finally won… three days after she died. Ann Carter died on April 16 at the age of 67. Her grieving son, going through her things after she died, found a EuroMillions lottery ticket folded inside an envelope on which she had written ‘Saturday draw – don’t forget!’ She died on the Wednesday before the draw. Liam Carter said his mom had played every week and never won anything. Liam told the local news, “She always said if she ever won, the money would be for me. It really felt like something she left behind for me. Like one final gift.” (* Which is not at all a suspicious thing to say.) While it was not a monster win, the ticket had a payout of £18,000 ($24,000).
* Pffft! They have a lot of nerve calling it EuroMILLIONS.
* Millions of suckers, they mean.
* Her number was up.
* Some people have all the luck. Like her son, boy, he sure hit it lucky.

AIRPLANE OVERRUN BY MOSQUITOS

Passengers on an IndiGo Air flight last Monday (4/21) from Lucknow to Delhi, India, had to deal with an army of mosquitoes swarming the cabin. Passengers said the cabin door was left open on the tarmac as they were loading. Pictures from the 90-minute flight show large mosquitos all over the plane’s interior. The cabin crew didn’t know what to do. One passenger later wrote: “The whole flight was spent scratching, swatting and just praying for the flight to get over.”
* Yeah, mosquitos in India. Very rare occurrence.
* Everybody’s got an inflight magazine — get swatting!
* For the mosquitos it was like fish in a barrel.
* Usually it’s just your seatmate that bugs you on airplanes.
* And that’s the buzz from India.

AUDIO: AUSTRALIAN RADIO STATION CAUGHT USING A.I. DJ

[We don’t know if you want to air this story; there might be a lot of awkward confessions that would have to be made about voice tracking and such. We present it mainly for you real-life DJs (And bless you for still existing!). We thought you might find it frighte— er. interesting.]
An Australian radio station is facing backlash after being caught using an AI-generated host for the last six months without disclosing it. Radio CADA (pronounced ‘KAY-duh’) created a host called Thy (pronounced ‘thigh’) using artificial intelligence software. They gave her – or it – a show called The Workdays with Thy (four hours a day Monday through Friday), but did not mention on its website or promotional materials that Thy was not a real person. Thy’s true nature only came to light after a local blogger questioned whether Thy was a real person. She was not able to find any biographical information on Thy. Plus, audio analysis of voice clips revealed that Thy sounded identical when saying the words “old school” across different shows. The station subsequently acknowledged the use of AI to create the voice of Thy, but also noted that the fake DJ has real fans, despite not being a real person. ElevenLabs, the tech company behind the voice, said they were “pushing the boundaries of what ‘live radio’ even means.” They said the voice was modeled off a woman who works in their accounting department, but did not say whether they paid her, or who – if anyone – writes Thy’s scripts.
* This is not the story to go running to your station owner with.
* Luckily, this is the only radio station on earth using a fake AI DJ.
* Sorry, but now that over 50% of YouTube narrations are AI, I’m finding it hard to get upset.
* Honestly, our boss is too cheap to even go the AI route. We are actually all a bunch of trained parrots.
CLIP: Here is why Thy sounds like.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

2001 – A Russian rocket lifted off from Central Asia bearing the first space tourist, California businessman Dennis Tito, and two cosmonauts on a journey to the international space station.
* Tito said it was great, except he complained about the leg room in tourist class.

1992 – The Agriculture Department unveiled the now-famous pyramid-shaped recommended-diet chart.
* Which we don’t follow, resulting in our bodies being pyramid-shaped – really, really wide when you get to our bottoms.

1965 – U.S. President Lyndon Johnson ordered 22,000 American troops into the Dominican Republic to stop “a communist dictatorship” from taking hold – most of LBJ’s suspected “communists” turned out to be imaginary.
* What a coincidence – Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction turned out to be imaginary, too.

1965 – Heavyweight boxing champ Muhammad Ali refused induction into the Army on religious grounds.
* “Sorry – but I can only attack my fellow man in the ring for money.”

1947 – Explorer Thor Heyerdahl left Peru on a small balsa wood raft named the “Kon-Tiki,” and sailed thousands of miles over 101 days to Polynesia to show that South Pacific islanders probably migrated from South America.
* I think in English “Kon-Tiki” means “Freakin’ Crazy.”

1919 – The first parachute jump was made over Dayton, Ohio.
* The jumper celebrated with a glass of champagne and a change of underwear.

1789 – The famous “mutiny on the Bounty” took place when a rebel crew took over the British ship HMS Bounty, set its Captain Bligh adrift, and set sail to Pitcairn Island.
* Actually, as far as dissension in the ranks is concerned, that was nothing compared to our last staff meeting.

THIS DAY IN MUSIC HISTORY

2023 – Ed Sheeran sang and played guitar to a New York jury at a civil trial that would decide whether his song “Thinking Out Loud” copied Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get it On.” For roughly an hour, Sheeran described his musical career and performed parts of the song. Heirs of Gaye’s co-writer were claiming that he stole elements of the chart-topping hit. Sheeran also reportedly told the packed courtroom: “I’m not the world’s most talented guitar player.” Sheeran later won the case.

2014 – Paul Simon and his wife Edie Brickell appeared in court after being arrested over a domestic dispute. The arrest came after a caller from the singers’ home phoned emergency services and then hung up. Simon told a Superior Court judge in Norwalk, Connecticut he had a rare argument with his wife on that Saturday night at their home and they were now fine.

2014 – Scorpions drummer James Kottak was sentenced to one month in jail in Dubai for offensive behavior after an incident at Dubai airport on April 3rd. He was convicted of insulting Islam, raising his middle finger and being under the influence of alcohol.

2008 – Scott Weiland, singer with The Stone Temple Pilots, was sentenced to 192 hours in county jail for his November 2007 drunk driving offense. He was also fined $2000, required to complete an 18-month alcohol program, and was placed on probation for four years.

2003 – Apple Inc. broke new ground in the music industry by launching the iTunes Store, the first legally authorized download platform for buying music. The store was established after the company reached an agreement with all five major record companies to market their catalogs. By February 2010, the iTunes Store was the largest music vendor in the world.

2003 – Ozzy Osbourne’s son Jack was reported to be in rehab. The 17-year-old was a patient at Las Encinas Hospital in Pasadena, California.

2000 – A blaze swept through James Brown Enterprises, the office that co-ordinated the superstar’s tours. Nobody was injured, but memorabilia and live tapes were destroyed in the blaze. An employee was later arrested and charged with arson.

1991 – Singer, songwriter and guitarist Bonnie Raitt married actor Michael O’Keefe.
