FRENCH FRIES ARE NOT DEPRESSING
A widely circulated story that came out recently claimed that a study out of China found eating a lot of french fries is “strongly associated” with a higher risk of anxiety and depression. The report has been disputed by many in the scientific field. (* Thank god for scientists, huh?) The researchers looked at whether there was an association between eating fried foods and depression, first in humans, then in zebra fish.
– For example, clinical psychologist and University of Calgary adjunct assistant professor Jonathan Stea tweeted Tuesday: “French fries don’t land people in hospital.” (* That’s all the proof I need!)
– Pediatrician and medical thriller author Dr. Joel Shulkin noted that association doesn’t prove cause-and-effect. He tweeted, “It may be depressed people are more likely to eat french fries as a comfort food.”
* Did the Chinese guy note that the subjects of their study live in, y’know, China? Maybe that explains the depression.
* Somebody ought to tell the zebra fish that the study was bogus. That’ll cheer them up.
* French fries don’t land you in the hospital with depression. But if you’re in the hospital and you have to eat hospital French fries – they’re not exactly a pick-me-up.
* No one gets sad over French fries. The depression comes when you take the last bite of that second Whopper Jr.
