$100 MILLION GIANT BLOB OF SAPPHIRES FOUND IN BACKYARD
Workers digging a well in the backyard of a Sri Lankan home dug up a 1100-pound sapphire cluster worth as much as $100 million. A sapphire cluster is a group of gemstones bound together by mud or clay. The home just happened to belong to a gem trader. He was told about the strange find, and they dug it up. This happened last year, and it took more than a year to clean the stone before it could be certified to be a huge glob of sapphires, probably formed around 400 million years ago, according to one gemologist. Given the size and its value, experts think the stone, which has been dubbed “Serendipity Sapphire,” will interest private collectors or museums.
* At 1100 pounds, I’d call it the Hernia Sapphire.
* 1100 pounds? Or do you think maybe some of the well diggers knocked off a couple of baseball-sized chunks?
* “Look, I know it’s worth $100 million, but go ahead and put it in a museum.”
* Boy, some guys who hire men to dig wells in parts of the world known for their gemstones have all the luck.
* If I were that homeowner, I’d use some of the money to connect to the city water supply, instead of digging a well.
