CROATIAN TOWN SELLING HOMES FOR 16 CENTS EACH
In the country of Croatia, citizens are leaving the charming little villages and moving to the major metropolitan cities of Zagreb, Dubrovnik, and the happenin’ city of Istria. One quaint little town, Legrad, has a plan to bring in new people. The village is selling abandoned homes to interested buyers for just one kuna each (or 16 American cents). There are a couple caveats: the homes are fixer-uppers, and you are required to live there for 15 years. (* They must have gotten that idea from the Russians in Siberia.) But – more good news – new homeowners will be offered up to 25,000 kune towards any home improvements.
* 25,000 kune! Why, that’s equal to… (let me do the math)… $4,015.35. Or, the cost of a housecall by an American plumber.
* Give it 72 hours before HGTV turns this into a fixer-upper competition show.
* I’m sure the town will give you all the cinder blocks you need for interior decorating.
* Just remember – these are houses that EVEN CROATIANS DIDN’T WANT.
* 16 cents a house! Use the money you save on Croatian language lessons.
* Get ready to repeat the phrase, “No no no! Otvoreni koncept! Otvoreni koncept!!” That’s Croatian for “open concept.”
