YOU WON’T OWN A CAR IN 12 YEARS
A major new report by RethinkX – an independent think tank – predicts that by 2030, the overwhelming majority of consumers will no longer own a car. Instead they will use on-demand electric self-driving vehicles. By 2030, the report says, 95 per cent of all U.S. passenger miles traveled will be served by on-demand, autonomous, electric vehicles that will be owned by fleets rather than individuals, decimating entire portions of automobiles’ value chains, causing oil demand and prices to plummet, and destroying trillions of dollars in investor value, not to mention the value of used cars. On the other hand, it will create trillions of dollars in new business opportunities, consumer surplus and GDP growth.
* So if you haven’t cleaned out your garage by now, don’t bother, is what I’m hearing.
* Sure – try picking up girls in a tiny electric buggy you don’t even own.
* Anybody feeling sad that there will be no more car dealers?
* I guess with their skill set, car salesmen will have to become lawyers.
* Call my broker! I missed out on the fidget spinner boom, and I’m not going to miss this.
* What the hell?! I just had my driveway repaved. And now I’m not going to need it?
* You can take my car when you pry it from my cold, lead foot.
* Cars represent freedom so I can see why the government would want to eliminate them.
* Wait, hold on. A think tank predicting the future? I’m putting exactly zero faith into that.
* I can just hear that meeting: “Okay, think tankers. We’ve got a major new report coming out and we need something that’ll catch the public’s eye. Something big.”
* “How about, ‘They want to take away our cars by 2030?'”
* “I like it. It’s total BS of course, but it’s catchy.”
