WOMAN HAS MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR PAINTING HANGING IN HER KITCHEN

An elderly woman kept what she thought was an “old religious painting” in the kitchen of her apartment in Compiègne, a town in northern France. When she took it to her local auctioneer for an appraisal, she was stunned to discover it was in fact a 13th-century artwork by Florentine painter Cimabue. An art expert estimates its value to be between $4.4 and $6.6 million. The 8″ x 10″ artwork, which had long been hanging above a hot plate, is titled “Christ Mocked,” and is part of an eight-scene series depicting Christ’s passion and crucifixion. Other paintings in that series are hanging in London’s National Gallery and New York’s Frick Collection.
* Big deal. The inside of the refrigerator here at the station looks like a Jackson Pollack painting.
* So grandma was an art thief, is that what you’re saying?
* Hanging above a hotplate. Good luck cleaning off the cheese from the French Onion Soup.
* It’s great that she’ll be able to enjoy all that money, now that she only has a couple of years left at best.
* On the bright side, she’s suddenly now hearing from her relatives. ALL of them.
