TODAY IS …
(All days repeat annually on today’s date unless otherwise noted; days may or may not be called “National”/”International”/”World” depending on source; sources listed often have additional info. We generally do not list special days which were created by commercial companies for the purpose of marketing, or the hundreds of disease awareness listings which occur each year.)
CAMERA DAY
The Holiday Insights website says this:
“Camera Day is best celebrated with pictures. Pictures are invaluable memories of our lives and of the world. They tell stories. Our memories and stories are captured by a camera. With digital technology, using a camera has never been easier. Cameras are now built into cell phones, so you always have a camera with you, ready to record the moments of your life. To many people, a camera is a vital tool to record important events in the family and in the world. It captures the moment … forever. It creates the memories that we share and look back upon. From the birth of a baby, to high school graduations, people take pictures at a fast click. Year after year, the camera records family vacations, holidays and Christmas. The camera takes pictures of good times, and occasionally bad time. George Eastman is the ‘Father of Photography.’ He didn’t invent photography. He made many photographic inventions, and created the mass production that brought cameras into everyday use by millions, if not billions of people. His most famous slogan ‘You take the picture, we do the rest.’ Celebrate Camera Day today in a memorable way. Use your digital camera and click the day away!”
INTERNATIONAL MUD DAY
The Holiday Insights website says this:
“Today is International Mud Day. Let’s get down and dirty! To celebrate this very special day, all you need is some water and some dirt. Mix them together, and you’re ready to have some fun! International Mud Day is for everyone, both children, and the child inside of us. Set aside the electronic games. Turn off the television. Set down the smart phone, along with the apps. The purpose of this day is to help children, by bringing them back outdoors to learn about and enjoy nature, along with all it has to offer. To celebrate International Mud Day: Immerse yourself and your friends in a mud pit; Make mud pies and/or mud sculptures; Organize a nature hike for children or yourself. The Origin of International Mud Day: In Nepal, where International Mud Day began, the intention of the original event was to enrich the lives of 58 orphans, by getting them outdoors to enjoy the environment. After splashing in the mud, these children’s moods and attitudes were much improved. This special day is sponsored by the World Forum Foundation.”
WAFFLE IRON DAY
The Holiday Insights website says this:
“Waffle Iron Day celebrates this great kitchen gadget that makes tasty waffles. Waffles are cooked between two metal plates. A waffle iron is powered by electricity to heat the plates and create, light waffles ready for you to top with syrup, and/or your favorite fruits. Waffles are not just for breakfast. They are good for lunch or dinner, too. The origin of the waffle: The waffle dates back to the 1300s in Greece. Greeks cooked flat cakes between two metal pans. At the time, they topped it with cheeses and herbs. Pancake syrup wasn’t around back then. You do know how to celebrate this day … don’t you!? If you don’t have a waffle iron, today is a good day to go out and buy one. If you are too busy to make waffles yourself, buy some frozen in your grocery store, or order them out at a restaurant.”

HOW TO SPOT A SPOTTY RESTAURANT
Reddit recently asked restaurant chefs to share red flags that a restaurant might be low-quality. Here are some of their warning signs:
– “Dirty bathrooms and dirty floors equal dirty kitchen.”
– “A huge menu is a sign that food is either frozen, precooked, and reheated.”
– “If there’s a fish tank, take a look at it. If it’s clean, you can bet the kitchen is too.”
– “Carpet is a red flag — it’s quieter and doesn’t get slick, but it is one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever seen in restaurants. Vacuuming only goes so far.”
– “The bread. It has to be good bread. If they can’t get the bread right, they don’t know anything. No chef in their right mind half-asses the bread.” (* That’s true. Like most people, I like my bread full-assed.)
– “If you can smell the seafood when you walk in, then it’s not fresh.” (* But if the seafood can smell YOU when you walk in, you might be asked to leave.)
– “If you see lots of plates left half-full, run.”
– “Cheap ketchup on the table, or if they even let you see the ketchup brand.” (* And if you see ketchup dripping off the walls, you know that Donald Trump has just eaten there.)
* A super red flag is when the entres actually have red flags stuck in them.
* Biggest clue: Vomit buckets at each table.
* On the other hand… if you walk into a barbecue place and see any or all of these things, that’s how you know it’s a great barbecue place.
* My rule is, if I see professional speed eater Joey Chestnut anywhere near the place, I’ll avoid it. He can have all the food.
SURVEY: WE’RE REALLY BAD AT NATURE
British homebuilder Redrow surveyed 2,000 British adults about nature. Some of the findings:
– Only 58% could correctly identify a robin. (* Yet 96% could identify Batman.)
– More than half (55%) could not distinguish between a moth and a butterfly.
– One out of four people had no idea a caterpillar transforms into a butterfly.
– The average adult can only identify six birds and six insects that commonly visit gardens. (* I would call that the “below average” adult.)
– 78% can not tell the difference between a bee and a wasp.
* Yeah, we’re pretty well screwed as a planet.
* Sounds like this homebuilding company wants people to be able to identify the bugs that are infesting their new home.
* Could the Brits at least identify those hedgehogs thingies that are running all over their country?
* Bees are happy and busy. Wasps are just jerks. That’s all you need to know.
U.S. NEWS
WOMAN BANNED FROM DISNEY WORLD FOR SLAPPING HER HUSBAND
A woman was arrested for slapping her husband at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The reason they were fighting, the husband said, was from the stress their Disney World vacation was causing on their marriage. Asia Curry, 31, of Westchester, Illinois and her husband have been married six years and have two children together. Back on June 3, the couple got into a fight in the parking lot in front of an Orange County Sheriff’s deputy. The family had spent the day at the theme park, and the husband told authorities that they were arguing about marital issues related to “the stress of their vacation to Disney World.” At one point, Mrs. Curry slapped him in the back of his head. That’s when the deputy moved in and arrested her for domestic violence. Disney has banned her from all of their parks.
* Mmmm… hot Curry!
* Disney World – The Slappiest — er, Happiest Place on Earth!
* Somebody was grumpy, and I don’t mean one of the Seven Dwarfs.
* Somebody was dopey, too – slapping their husband in front of a deputy.
* What was the marital issue – whether to stick with it?
* I hope they give her a Fast Pass out of jail.
THIEVES STEAL THREE SEMIS FULL OF MEAT
Three semi-trailers full of meat were stolen this weekend in Grand Island, Nebraska. Police believe it was more than one person (* Good police work there, Lou.) and added that similar bulk meat thefts have been happening in other regions of the state over the past several weeks that are probably related. Each trailer contained well over $200,000 worth of meat (* So that’s what – eight or nine steaks?). Police ask that if anyone has information about the stolen trucks and trailers to contact the Grand Island Police Department.
* Wipe the barbecue sauce off your fingers and call them.
* The owner of the meat trucks should have asked police for a stakeout.
* If the thieves are caught, they’ll get a real grilling.
* Leavin’ trucks fulla meat unguarded. When will dey ever loin?
* We can rule out White Castle as suspects. They have no need for real meat. (Or Taco Bell. Or any awful restaurant in your area.)
AUDIO: IS BED, BATH AND BEYOND CUTTING ITS A/C TO SAVE MONEY?
A new report from Bank of America claims that the Bed Bath and Beyond stores are cutting their air conditioning in an effort to quickly lower expenses to make up for a slump in sales. However, Bed Bath & Beyond says that any changes in store temperature guidelines did not come from corporate. “We’ve been contacted about this report, and to be clear, no Bed Bath & Beyond stores were directed to adjust their air conditioning.”
* They never were a very cool store, and this proves it.
* Turning off the AC to save money. That’s cold.
* Everybody should just chill. But that’s hard with the AC turned off.
* If they want to save money, how about cutting back on the catalogue and coupon printing.

2-YEAR-OLD JOINS MENSA
Mensa, the high IQ society, has accepted its youngest member ever – a 2-year-old from Oldham County, Kentucky. Her name is Isla McNabb. While she loves to run around, play with her toys and her cat, her parents noticed that something was different. She was sounding out different letters of the alphabet, then began sounding out simple words, and pretty soon, Isla was reading at a kindergarten level at 2 years old. A psychiatrist suggested getting her an IQ test. Isla tested in the 99th percentile for her age group. Soon after the test, she was invited to join Mensa, making her the youngest member ever inducted. Her parents say Isla can now read over 500 words.
* She knows her letters, she can sound out words, she’s eminently qualified for a position on cable news.
* She’s so smart, her parents let her figure out their cable and streaming bills.
* The true test of superior intelligence is if she can explain cryptocurrency.
* Her favorite book is “One Fish, Two Fish, The Square Root of Pi Fish.”
* You know how you can spot a member of Mensa? They tell you within the first 30 seconds of meeting you. They’re almost as bad as people who have a black belt in karate.
INTERNATIONAL NEWS
WOMEN CAUGHT SMUGGLING PORCUPINES AND ARMADILLOS
Two Indian women were busted in the Bangkok, Thailand airport allegedly trying to smuggle 109 live animals in their luggage. This wasn’t the usual birds and bugs – officials found 50 lizards, 20 snakes, two white porcupines, two armadillos and 35 turtles. The women were traveling to India. Both women were detained and charged with violating the country’s Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act. Officials did not say what the woman were planning to do with the critters upon arriving at their destination.
* But, it’s Asia, so we can only assume the delicious – er, uh, the worst.
* What I mean is, the women probably told authorities, “I thought we were allowed to bring snacks on the plane.”
* “But those are our emotional support armadillos!”
* At least they didn’t try to smuggle them up their butts.

* However, to the vexation of high school students through history, he kept back-up copies of his plays elsewhere.
