UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA TO COUNSEL STUDENTS OFFENDED BY HALLOWEEN COSTUMES
The University of Florida is offering counseling services for students who are offended by costumes this Halloween. A memo released by UF said a counselor would be available 24/7 to help ‘impacted’ students. The memo also encouraged students to think about their ‘choices of costumes and themes’. It reads: “If you choose to participate in Halloween activities, we encourage you to think about your choices of costumes and themes. Some Halloween costumes reinforce stereotypes of particular races, genders, cultures, or religions. Regardless of intent, these costumes can perpetuate negative stereotypes, causing harm and offense to groups of people.” The university also warned students that their costumes may be seen on social media posts that could have a “long-term impact on your personal and professional reputation.”
* Are zombies a culture?
* It sounds like the only safe costumes are superheroes – so I’m guessing this has all been cooked up by Marvel and DC Comics.
* I hope counseling offended students consists of a swift kick in the pants.
* How about some counseling for people who are offended by extreme political correctness?
* No, on second thought, we don’t need counseling. That’s the whole point.
* Do they offer a major in wussiness, or is that next?
* Sounds like a preemptive strike against the clown costumes.
* Impacted students? Why not call them traumatized and get it over with?
