TODAY IS …
(All days repeat annually on today’s date unless otherwise noted; days may or may not be called “National”/”International”/”World” depending on source; sources listed often have additional info. We generally do not list special days which were created by commercial companies for the purpose of marketing – including “holidays” created by the National Day Calendar and Wellcat websites to drive traffic to their websites – or the hundreds of disease awareness listings which occur each year. We present only those specially designated days we feel your listeners would find most interesting or significant.)
NATIONAL CELLOPHANE TAPE DAY
The Days of the Year website says this:
“The first brand of cellophane tape was developed by Richard Gurley Drew, who worked at the company that is now known as 3M. Drew joined the company in 1920, first inventing masking tape in 1926, followed by cellophane tape in 1930. It was called ‘Scotch’ tape and now bears a very recognizable trademark of a red, black, and green tartan pattern. The term came about when a body shop painter who was testing one of the first tapes announced in frustration, ‘Take this tape back to those Scotch bosses of yours and tell them to put more adhesive on it!’ ‘Scotch’ at the time was a slang term for ‘stingy.’ While it was the first cellophane tape on the market, there are hundreds of brands on the market today. Contrary to what many people assume, cellophane, is not plastic. It’s made from processed cellulose, just like paper.”

THE BUZZ
MEN CALLING MEN TO WISH EACH OTHER A GOODNIGHT
According to USA Today, which is never wrong, there is a new TikTok trend that is encouraging men to call up their male friends before bed to tell them goodnight. In the videos, the recipient of the call is usually surprised or confused by the call in a “what the heck are you doing” kind of way. The majority of these videos are said to be filmed by a wife, fiancé or girlfriend, and they are more of a spoof than a real social trend. The men in the videos are pleasantly surprised by how it good it feels to check in with a friend or have a friend concerned about you.
* When Harry Met Ollie.
* “You hang up first.” “No, YOU hang up fir— hello?”
* At least it’s not men calling friends to sing a lullaby.
* I’m shocked! They’re still putting out USA Today?
* We need to pass a law that says just because somebody does something to try to get clicks on TikTok, that does not constitute a “trend” worth writing about.
AMERICA #1 IN SWEARING
Linguists in Australia recently analyzed the Global Web-Based English Corpus, a massive database containing over 1.9 billion words from 1.8 million web pages across 340,000 websites in 20 English-speaking countries. They came up with a list of the Countries That Swear The Most:
1. United States
2. Britain
3. Australia
4. Singapore
5. New Zealand
6. Malaysia
7. Ireland
8. Jamaica
9. Canada
10. Nigeria
* My heavens!
* These are curse words they found on web pages. If you count cursing while driving, the numbers go way up.
* Curse words found on websites? Oh, I get it. It’s from what people are writing in the “comments” sections.
* I always thought is was the damn Scots who swore the most.
* If you watch British tv shows, the English curse like an American sailor.
* I’d tell you what I really think of this study, but I can’t say the words on the air.
U.S. NEWS
11-YEAR-OLD GRADUATES COLLEGE
A 11-year-old California girl in California has just graduated college. Rafael Perales says his daughter, Alisa, could read at 2-1/2 years old. By 3, she was writing with upper elementary school precision. Alisa moved onto long division by age 4 and basic algebra by the time she was 5.
By age 8, Alisa had completed all the coursework mandated by the state to graduate from high school with a diploma. Next, Rafael got her into Crafton Hills Community College in Yucaipa. Alisa proved to be a standout student. Over 2-1/2 years at the college, she posted a 3.8 GPA. Now 11, she graduated last Friday with associate degrees in multiple sciences and mathematics. She is the school’s youngest graduate and among the youngest in California state history. Up next is a university — she’s already been accepted to a few University of California campuses, though she hasn’t yet decided where she’s heading this fall.
* Probably over to Hot Topic at the mall.
* She has associate degrees in sciences and mathematics, with a minor in horsies and stick-on nails.
* The best part? More years to pay off those student loans.
* Are you smarter than a should-be-a-fifth-grader? No, you are not.
* There has to be, like, 100 other 20-year-old students at that community college who saw this and just said, “Screw it, I quit.”
OLIVE GARDEN EMPLOYEES ANGRY OVER WHITE SHIRT DRESS CODE
Olive Garden servers are now angry over a dress code change. The servers at several of the chain’s restaurants have been ordered to swap out black shirts for white shirts. Not a big deal, except that they’re working in a pasta restaurant. The white shirts have been described as “sauce magnets.” One server complained that they had bought over 15 white shirts so far. Some insiders at Olive Garden, who spoke anonymously out of fear of losing their jobs, said that some locations have agreed with their servers’ concerns and have not made the switch over to the white shirts.
* Thanks for letting me know how gross that black shirt is my waiter is wearing.
* They’ll wear white shirts, but they’ll only serve white Alfredo sauce.
* Why do they not go with red & white checkers shirts, like the tablecloths at traditional Italian restaurants? It hides all sorts of grossness.
* This story brought to you by Clorox bleach.
WOMAN INJURED BY GAS IN JAR
In Denver, Colorado, a woman was injured recently after she opened a glass jar labeled “to my enemies” and it emitted an unknown gas that burned her face. The woman found the jar in her yard. It also contained a letter, debris and nails. She reported the incident to police after seeking medical treatment.
* Police should be investigating using the ‘She who smelt it, dealt it’ theory.
* I think the jar actually contained two letters: P and U.
* Although I’ve got food jars in my refrigerator right now that, if I opened them, would knock a buzzard off a meat wagon.
* I think we’ve all experienced that kind of gas attack before. Eyebrow-singeing.
* Folks, if you ever find a strange jar in your yard, keep a lid on it.
AUDIO: WIENIE 500 RESULTS
The first-ever Wienie 500 was held in front of a crowd of nearly 80,000 fans last Friday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, as the full fleet of six Oscar Mayer Wienermobiles raced twice around the 2.5-mile track at speeds topping almost 60 miles an hour. (* The 80,000 had come to watch the final driver practice for Monday’s actual race.) The Wienie 500 pulled together all the current Wienermobiles touring different regions of the United States for an Indy-style race. There was some excitement: the leader coming out of turn number two, the No. 4 Wienermobile, started smoking, overheated, and dropped back to last place (* smoked sausage!). The winner, by half a hot dog length: Slaw Dog, hailing from the Southeast region.
* Slaw Dog really cut the mustard.
* Just like the Kentucky Derby, the losers were sent to the glue factory.
* It appeared to be a long and hard race.
* I don’t suppose they could engineer the wienermobiles to do wheelies. That would be, er something.

NEW YORK CITY TO HOST PIGEON FEST
A New York City park will be celebrating the pigeon next month. Pigeon Fest, June 14th, will be a day-long event at The High Line, an elevated park on the West Side of Manhattan. Alan van Capelle, the park’s executive director, says Pigeon Fest will include art exhibitions, science demonstrations, a panel on urban ecology and bird conservation (* oh, pigeons are endangered now, are they?), plus actual fun stuff like a pigeon dance party, a pigeon impersonation pageant, and a puppet show put on by Mother Pigeon, a woman famous in New York for feeding the birds while dressed in a giant pigeon costume.
* She sounds coo-coo.
* Sounds like a guaranteed crap fest to me.
* There’ll even be some of those three-card monte guys there, looking for pigeons, so bring your money.
* I feel sorry for the poor schlub who has to clean up the park after Pigeon Fest.
* Coming next: Rat-apalooza.
THE ORGY DJs
There is an occupation out there called the Orgy DJ. They do exactly what the title say: they spin music for sex parties. One guy, DJ J. Maximilian, says a common problem is when couples use his equipment for support, and their activity shakes it around. He says he often has to remind people “not to use the DJ table for adult-play activities that require stabilization.” Maximilian has perfected his musical approach to setting the mood. He keeps things relatively slow, playing nothing over 120 BPM; avoids distracting vocals; and sticks to stripped-down, dark chords. Since dancing isn’t the point, he prefers to play “downtempo and chill.” These are some of the songs that the DJs recommend for your next orgy:
– “Daddy” by Tokischa
– “Waves” by Normany
– “Slow Down” by VanJess
– “Everything Goes” by Poolside
– “High for This” by The Weeknd
* In my day, it was “Slow Ride” by Foghat. Unfortunately, it was the 3-minute edit version.
* The shaking by the people is bad for the vinyl records and turntable needles, and also he sometimes wishes he had a splash guard.
* Once again, my high school guidance counselor neglected to make me aware of this particular specialization in my chosen field.
* The worst is when, right in the middle of things, they throw it to traffic and weather.
* “We’ll get back to the sexin’ in a minute, but first… let’s check in with Hollywood News! How about those Kardashians, huh?”
