TRUFFLE FARMER HAS BEEN GIVING THEM AWAY

Mike Collison, a truffle farmer in England, says that he has over $37,000 worth of the expensive delicacy “rotting in the ground.” Truffles are the rare mushrooms that grow underground near tree roots. They sometimes sell for thousands of dollars per pound. Truffles are costly because they’re hard to find, frustrating to grow, and impossible to store for any length of time. And now, with the pandemic in full swing, Mr. Collison says there are no fancy restaurants to sell his crop to. So, he’s giving them away to locals for free. He says around 50 his neighbors who have never had truffles now have tried them, and he’s had no complaints.
* Sounds like a real fun guy (fungi).
* Truffles – the zucchini of England.
* The truffles are worth over $37,000? Not if nobody wants them.
* Maybe this is karma for gouging people by selling them for thousands of dollars a pound for so long.
* I’m a little preoccupied with getting punched by someone who resents my wearing a face mask. Can I worry about the truffle farmers some other time?
