TIME CAPSULE DISCOVERED IN BEDROOM
Greg Sandoval was doing some renovation on his Fontana, California home about six years ago when he discovered a time capsule from 1978. A 12-year-old boy had written a note and left some trinkets in a bag behind a wall. The note read:
“Hello to whoever finds this. My name is Robert Wright. Today my dad is putting up paneling. Today is November 18th, 1978, 15 till
12:00 noon. I’m 12 years old and a student at Fontana JR. High, 7th grade. I am 5’3, blond hair, hazel eyes. Here is proof of the date. Robert Wright.” Besides the letter, there was a McDonald’s scratch card game, newspaper clippings and coins. Sandoval hung on to the box and, after six years, finally decided to do something about it. He called the local ABC station in Los Angeles, and they tracked down Robert Wright, now 49 and living in Texas. Wright was going to be in the West Coast for a conference in March, and he decided to pick it up personally. Wright said that, at the time, making the capsule was a “spur-of-the-moment” kind of thing. His dad was redoing the interior wall inside the house so he decided “to throw something in before he sealed it.”
* 1978 isn’t a time capsule. 1978 is a magazine in my dentist’s office.
* Boy, how things have changed since 1978. For example, what’s a newspaper?
* On the other hand – a McDonald’s scratch game card. Still valid.
* Here’s what’s truly frightening – I’m still wearing shirts from 1978.
* Anyone else amused by the phrase “a spur of the moment time capsule”?
* It’s kind of like a momentary eternity.
