TIKTOK SUPPRESSES VIDEOS OF UNATTRACTIVE PEOPLE

So you want to post videos on TikTok, and make money? It turns out the company has a secret policy of rejecting or suppressing videos of poor, disabled or unattractive people. ByteDance, the Chinese company behind the popular video-sharing app, regularly instructs moderators to identify posts from users it deems unattractive, then artificially limits the audience reach of those posts to bar them from appearing in the app’s “For You” section. A spokesperson from TikTok claims the policy was an attempt to preventing bullying, but is “no longer in place.” However, sources have said that these policies were in place as recently as late 2019. The censorship policies extend to content depicting poverty, or people with disabilities. Some of the physical traits deemed unfavorable by the company’s guidelines include “too many wrinkles,” “abnormal body shape,” “eye disorders,” and “obvious beer belly.”
* Add “bad teeth” to that list and I’ve got a BINGO.
* “Abnormal body shape”? So, like, 90% of the animal kingdom?
* They’re thinking of launching an uggo version of TikTok, called EewYuk.
* Censoring videos? Gee, this doesn’t sound like the Chinese at all.
