TODAY IS …
(All days repeat annually on today’s date unless otherwise noted; days may or may not be called “National”/”International”/”World” depending on source; sources listed often have additional info. We generally do not list special days which were created by commercial companies for the purpose of marketing – including “holidays” created by the National Day Calendar and Wellcat websites to drive traffic to their websites – or the hundreds of disease awareness listings which occur each year. We present only those specially designated days we feel your listeners would find most interesting or significant.)

NATIONAL KITTEN DAY
Founded in 2012 by pet lover, animal behaviorist, writer and author Colleen Paige to raise awareness for the plight of kittens and cats that need to be rescued each year. Many activists like to use this day to raise funds for charitable organizations that help kittens and cats, especially those who spay and neuter feral cats.

NATIONAL PIÑA COLADA DAY
Pina Colada means “strained pineapple,” a reference to the freshly pressed and strained pineapple juice used in the drink. First created in Puerto Rico in 1954, its history is contested among Puerto Ricans, but one story says the bartender Ramón “Monchito” Marrero first prepared it at the Caribe Hilton’s Beachcomber Bar in San Juan, Puerto Rico on August 16, 1954. The hotel had requested that Monchito mix a new signature drink that embodied the flavors of the island and shortly after he accepted the challenge, the Piña Colada was born.

PICK BLUEBERRIES DAY

TEDDY BEAR PICNIC DAY

And here’s a spare, in case you don’t like one of those three: “The Worst Thing About My Kids Growing Up Is They Don’t Want To Go See Giant Colorful Pigeons With Me”

IDENTICAL TWIN STORIES

Reddit asked people for identical twin stories. Here are some of the responses:
– “My boyfriend is an identical twin. He told me that his parents would differentiate him from his brother by putting nail polish on one of their big toes when they were babies. One night, while bathing them, the nail polish chipped off and in the confusion, his parents couldn’t tell them apart. They just made their best guess as to who was who.”
– “The doctors put a Sharpie mark on one of our heads and told our parents to keep put the mark on our heads till they figured it out.”
– “My brother and I had name bands on one leg. One morning they discovered that both bands had fallen off. So they weighed us and the heavier one (by an ounce) was me. Probably correct.”
– “I knew a twin girl who said that at around age 4-5, she and her sister decided they each wanted to be the other name, so they just switched. Their family had a hard time keeping track of who was who anyway, so when a girl insisted they were a name, they went with it.”
– “We applied for our drivers licenses and when we looked at our birth certificates we realized our mom had our middle names mixed up for the first sixteen years of our life. I still struggle to remember what my middle name actually is.”
– “My sister has a lazy eye so my parents just had to wait for us to get tired.”
– “I played an April Fools joke with daycare once. Dressing my boy/girl twin babies in the other’s clothes. They looked alike as babies so much that daycare only found out when it was time for a diaper change.”
– “Mom here. I still call them the wrong names, you know, just to keep them on their toes.”
– “Dated an identical twin. At family dinner, one pulled the “I’m two minutes older than you” bit. Without skipping a beat, Grandma (of all people) interjects with “you know, you always throw away the first pancake.”
* PHONE TOPIC: Do you have an identical twin story?

WOMAN INUNDATED WITH RETURNED AMAZON BOXES

In San Jose, California, a woman has been receiving hundreds of packages of car seat covers from Amazon. The woman, who gives her name as ‘Kay,’ says the faux-leather car seat covers come from a Chinese online seller. But, as Kay has determined, many of the covers didn’t fit and consumers have paid money to return them to the company’s “return center” – only the company has listed Kay’s home address as the return center. Kay says she’s contacted Amazon countless times to try and resolve this over the past year, and every time she was absolutely assured it will stop… and yet the packages just keep coming, blocking her driveway, mail front porch, mailbox and yard. And to make matters worse, she says Amazon now wants her to deal with the issue — suggesting she give the packages away, donate them, or take them back to USPS and FedEx.
* It would be almost worth it to have them all dropped by helicopter onto Jeff Bezos’ boat.
* Is she absolutely, positively sure the return center isn’t in her house? Did she check the entire basement?
* Think of all the faux cows that were sacrificed to make all those faux-leather seat covers.
* Maybe Elon could buy them and offer them as an extra incentive with the purchase of any new Tesla Cybertruck.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

MAN IN A CATSUIT HAUNTS NEIGHBORHOOD

A man in a black cat suit has been menacing residents of a small British town. Residents in the Liverpool suburb of Wallasey say the person they now call “Pantherman” jumps out from behind trees and yells “meow.” The man is wearing a full-body black suit with a mask resembling a cat, and hangs around at night in wooded areas before he jumps out and scares his victims. Photos show him crawling around or writhing on the ground while meowing. In one video he’s sliding under a fence near a pub in town. Local resident Abbie Gilbert says, “Everyone and their nan seems to have seen him. I really don’t think he’s dangerous, just a bit strange.”
* Anybody seen Prince Andrew lately?
* It’s disturbing when he jumps out and meows. It’s even more disturbing when he lays down and licks himself.
* I’d hate to have to clean THAT litterbox.
* It’s when he starts singing “Memories” that you have to be worried.
* Hey, at least it’s not Slender Man.

BELLY DANCER ARRESTED FOR BEING SEDUCTIVE

A belly dancer has been arrested in Egypt for using “seductive techniques.” A woman who dances under the name of Linda Martino has more than two million followers on social media. On June 22, Egyptian authorities arrested her, accusing her of corrupting public morals with the provocative belly dancing on her Instagram account, in which she writhes around in revealing clothing and describes herself as “more than you can handle.” The Egyptian government says Martino “appeared in indecent clothing, deliberately exposing sensitive areas of the body, in blatant violation of social values.” She is expected to remain in jail for at least another two weeks.
* Wow. Talk about missing the point.
* Sadly, she was wrong about the “more than you can handle” part.
* Isn’t Egypt the country that invented belly dancing? It’s like arresting an American for cooking a burger and fries.
* Are they sure she’s dancing? My tummy makes the same gyrations after I’ve eaten falafel.
* Instagram? Time to switch to OnlyFans.

MAN SHOT IN HEAD CRAWLS OUT OF GRAVE, GOES TO CONVENIENCE STORE

We’re not sure why this story is just coming to light now, but in July of last year, in the town of Jimboomba, Australia, 50km south of Brisbane, a man climbed from his own grave after he was shot in the head, and walked into a convenience store. The Australian man had been targeted by hitmen from a drug ring who are also believed to be responsible for two other deadly attacks. Store security camera footage from July 21 last year shows the would-be-murder-victim, 23, covered in the dirt from his own grave walking into a service station at Jimboomba at around 5am. He had a bullet lodged in his brain and severe facial injuries, but begged the staff not to call emergency services. He asked for a taxi. The man slumped over before he was taken to a hospital – against his wishes – where the bullet was removed from his brain.
* He needed a taxi like he needed a hole in the head.
* In Australia, I believe they call this a “Tuesday.”
* Isn’t this the plot of, like, a couple dozen movies?
* While he was waiting he asked for a Slurpee, and then went, “Ooo – brain freeze!”
* Boy, I’ll bet there’s a drug ring hitman getting a real talking to right about now.
