SKATEBOARDER NABS HIT-AND-RUN DRIVER
A driver who struck a teenage girl with his car in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, was chased down by a skateboarder and detained until police arrived. Joshua Lambus had just arrived at the photography shop where he works when he saw an SUV driving erratically on Saturday afternoon. Pedestrians were leaping out of the way as the driver nearly pinned them against the guardrail and almost hit a bicyclist. Lambus jumped out of his car, grabbed his skateboard and chased the vehicle, which was slowed by traffic. He caught up with it just in time to see the SUV go on the curb and hit a 13-year-old girl. Other people were taking care of the girl, so, said Lambus, “I rode my skateboard up to the car door, opened it, engaged the emergency brake and held him there. I yelled at him a little.” The 30-year-old driver is now in custody. The girl has been treated and is faring well.
* Thank you, citizen dude.
* That sounds pretty gnarly.
* He caught up to the car, detained the driver, and did a helipop, and overcrook grind, and a kickback flip. (Skateboard tricks.)
* It’s a good thing he picked skateboarding and not, say, ice skating.
* You know what would be really rad? How about a crime-fighting skateboarder show?
* Dude, how stoked would you be for that?
* I volunteer to go to Kailua-Kona, Hawaii and follow up on this story.
* Having the skateboarder catch up with an SUV? That could be a good segue into our traffic report this morning.
