SCHOOL BANS PLAYGROUND TAG
Mercer Island School District in Washington State has banned children from playing the game of tag during recess. The school district’s communications director Macy Grade, in an email, says that the “rationale behind this [ban] is to ensure the physical and emotional safety of all students.” The school also wants kids to “keep their hands to themselves.” Parents were not consulted before the ban was made, and a lot aren’t happy. One parent says her son has stopped playing at recess. “He has been spending most of his recesses wandering around with his friend talking about video games, which is the last thing I want him to be doing,” said Kelsey Joyce.
* Why don’t we start by getting the teachers to keep their hands to themselves?
* Has any child really been traumatized by being “it”?
* Good idea. No tag means more time to deal drugs.
* Hopscotch has also been banned because it’s insensitive to people with one leg.
* The only option left is spending recess playing 20 minutes of “Statue.”
* “Emotional safety”? Here comes the New Age jargon again.
* It’s all part of the plan to create a nation of wusses.
* Just cut to the chase and outlaw fun.
