MEN AREN’T EARNING ENOUGH TO MAKE GOOD HUSBANDS
Sociologists at Cornell University have been exploring America’s declining marriage rate. A new study, published in the Journal of Marriage and Family, finds a lack of financially eligible bachelors. Lead study author Daniel Lichter, who has been studying marriage for 30 years, says, “There are shortages of economically attractive men.” He says that, although we like to think marriage is based on love, it “also is fundamentally an economic transaction,” and women want partners whom they can call their equals. Lichter says the gig economy and a “lack of good jobs” have contributed to the dearth of well-to-do dudes. In addition, women are outpacing men educationally, reversing the age-old dominance of the male breadwinner over the past five to 10 years. Now, he says, “More highly educated women are marrying down. Men have to get with the program.”
* Speaking as a man, let me just say that looking for a higher paying job cuts into our Xbox time.
* There’s an old joke: If I had a dollar for every woman who found me unattractive, they would eventually find me attractive.
* PHONE TOPIC: Men, would you/do you have a problem with your wife earning more than you?
