MAN WHO INVENTED “SOURTOE COCKTAIL” DIES, LEAVES TOES TO BAR

Dick Stevenson, the man who invented the infamous “Sourtoe Cocktail”, passed away last Thursday at the age of 89. The Sourtoe Cocktail is a shot of whiskey garnished with an amputated, mummified human toe. Stevenson came up with the idea for the drink in 1973, after buying a cabin in the Yukon Territory and finding that the previous owners had left behind a jar containing a preserved toe. The drink became a staple at the Downtown Hotel bar in Dawson City. Your lips have to touch the toe as you drink, but you can’t swallow the toe (though some have). The drink so far has been served to around 93,000 customers. In any case, Stevenson stipulated in his will that all 10 of his toes would be donated to the bar where the drink is served.
* It was all spelled out in a footnote.
* Of those 93,000 people, a good number came down with a case of Athlete’s Lip.
* They say their cocktail can go toe-to-toe with the best of them.
* I hope he had a pedicure before he passed.
* Don’t ask what the bar uses for martini olives.
