MACEDONIA CHANGES ITS NAME; NOW “NORTH MACEDONIA”
On Tuesday, the country formerly known as the Republic of Macedonia officially changed its name to the Republic of North Macedonia. There has been a long controversy over the name. After declaring independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, the country chose the name Macedonia. But that severely strained relations with neighbor Greece, which also has a region called Macedonia. Because of this, Greece had been blocking North Macedonia’s membership to NATO and kept it out of the EU until the name dispute was resolved. However, even if you’re now from North Macedonia, you can just be called a Macedonian.
* It’s a Mace-confusion is what it is.
* What if you’re from South North Macedonia?
* Great. First everyone is still writing “2018” on their checks, and now this.
* They’re gonna have to jam an extra note into their national anthem for the word “North”.
* Dammit! I JUST got my magnetic floating world globe from ThinkGeek, and now it’s wrong.
* On the bright side, all my Macedonia coins and dollar bills are now collector’s items!
* All this really means is, they’ll now be 27 slots later in the Olympic March of the Athletes, stuck between Nigeria and Norway rather than after Luxembourg.
