KEVIN, THE HURRICANE FLAG

The internet has become fixated on a YouTube live camera located on what’s called the Frying Pan Tower, a coast guard station 34 miles off North Carolina. The station is in the path of Hurricane Florence. The tower has cameras pointed at the Atlantic Ocean, the sky, and a live feed shows the storm, the wind, and the waves. The live shot also includes an American flag, which is being battered by the wind smack in the middle of the shot. Thursday morning, the flag flew strong, proud and intact. But as the day wore on, the flag began to tatter. People have been cheering the flag in the video’s comment section, submitting fan art, and somewhere along the line the flag picked up the name “Kevin”. There’s a @kevintheflag account on Twitter with a description that reads, “just your basic flappy boi tryin to make it in this world.”
The YouTube live feed is here. See if Kevin is still alive: https://www.fark.com/vidplayer/10161946
* Oh say, does our star-spangled Kevin yet wave?
* They named it Kevin because it’s obviously a male flag, because what female would be stupid enough to stand outside in a hurricane?
* If Kevin survives, he needs to run for office.

UPDATE AS OF FRIDAY 11AM EST: The wind has apparently turned the camera. From the Coast Guard’s Facebook profile – communication was lost with the tower. When things calm down, they will go out and replace Kevin.
