IRONIC DEATHS – LION CONSERVATIONIST, CLIMATE SCIENTIST KILLED BY THEIR RESPECTIVE HOBBIES
Two recent ironic deaths in the news:
– A South African wildlife conservationist was mauled to death Wednesday by two lions at his own safari lodge. West Mathewson, 68, was roughhousing with the 400-pound white lions when they turned on him in their enclosure at Lion Tree Top Lodge near Hoedspruit. His wife tried to save her husband from the lions, but he had already suffered fatal injuries. All the details surrounding the deadly attack are not known, but it has been suggested that the “rough play” was to blame.
* Rough play, and that bag of cat treats he forgot to take out of his jacket pocket.
* White lions. With patches of red.
– World-renowned climate scientist and glaciologist Konrad Steffen died last Saturday, killed by global warming. While doing research near a weather station in Greenland, Steffen fell into a deep crevasse full of water after snow and ice gave way beneath him. Rescue attempts were unsuccessful, and his body was not found. He was 68.
* His last word was, reportedly, “Seeeeeeeeee…????”
* Are we sure neither of these guys was in the middle of taking a selfie? That’s usually how it happens.
* Yet more proof that when it comes to hobbies, stamp-collecting is the way to go.
