HIGHER RISK OF COVID RESPIRATORY FAILURE IF YOU HAVE NEANDERTHAL DNA
A study by European scientists published Wednesday by the journal Nature finds that people with Neanderthal DNA may have a higher risk of hospitalization and respiratory failure from the coronavirus. Researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany determined that there are a certain cluster of genes, which likely came from Neanderthals, that are found in about 16% of the population in Europe and half the population in South Asia. In Africa and East Asia it is non-existent. Modern humans and Neanderthals are known to have interbred at various points in history, resulting in an exchange of genes than can still be found today.
* Another low-brow study.
* So all we have to do is go back in time and keep our ancestors away from those sexy Neanderthals. Easy-peasy.
* This doesn’t bode well for our sales department.
* This isn’t fair to Neanderthals. Never judge a man by the genes in his DNA, but by the amount of hair on his back. Or her back. Sorry, Linda in sales.
* The Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. The name just screams “Get over yourself”.
