HIGH SCHOOL EMBARRASSED BY MASCOT NAME "THE MILLIONAIRES"
Lenox, Massachusetts, is a place where, long ago, wealthy people had second homes, and they would come to vacation there. Over the years, many of them gave back by lavishing the community with philanthropy. They built a school and purchased uniforms for local children. Those millionaires were central to the survival of the town after many citizens left to fight in the wars. As a way of recognizing the generosity of their benefactors, Lenox Memorial Middle and High School in the 1950’s named their school teams “The Millionaires”, although the name does not appear on team uniforms. Now, the students of Lenox are ashamed to be called The Millionaires, and want to change it. Students report being harassed by rival teams because of the name. Julie Monteleone, a student council member, told the school board, “The term Millionaires has become associated with the top 1 percent of our country, which excludes and burdens a very large majority of the population and currently plays a large role in the division of the United States.”
* Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Not these kids.
* Wealth shaming? It’s about time.
* They’re ashamed to be called The Millionaires? Talk about your First World Problems.
* Wait – who are they kidding? A million bucks these days won’t get you to the end of the street.
* Maybe something more subtle. Change it to The Lenox Off-Shore Tax Shelters.
* Or, to move it into modern-day, The Corporate Raiders. “Raiders” for short.
* Or even shorter: The Haves.
