HELICOPTER PRISON ESCAPE GONE WRONG
A guy hijacked a helicopter in mid-air last Friday in an attempt to break his wife out of a Belgian prison. Mike Gielen, 24, gave a false reason for hiring the chopper, and once in the air he pulled out what turned out to be a fake handgun and ordered the pilot to fly to Berkendaal women’s prison in south Brussels. Gielen wanted to spring Kristel Appelt, 27, where she was being held on suspicion of murdering an ex-boyfriend. The helicopter circled the prison several times but the pilot was unable to land within the courtyard – there was no room. Meanwhile, Gielen became nauseous and threw up out of the helicopter five times. Giving up on the plan, he ordered the pilot to fly to a waiting getaway car. Not long after that, Gielen was found with his 50-year-old father. One of the ways they caught him: detectives found Gielen had used his own name when booking the helicopter.
* He’ll have plenty of time to figure out where his plan went wrong.
* Oh, come on! You bring the helicopter in low, she jumps and grabs onto a landing skid, and up you go! Why such a wuss?
* Authorities are charging him with hijacking, weapons possession, and littering from all the vomit.
* Oh well, back to the catapult idea.
