GRANDMA & GRAMPA KIDNAPPED FOR DRUG RANSOM
Five men – four from Quebec and one from Plattsburgh, New York – are accused of kidnapping an associate’s grandparents from their northern New York home, ferrying them into Canada, and holding them hostage in an alleged attempt to recover 100 pounds of cocaine. Sandra Helm, 70, told FBI agents she and her husband James had been taken over roads and water with pillowcases over their heads. Meanwhile, when 76-year-old James Helm did not show up for work on September 28, one of the couple’s sons went to their house to check on them, found them missing with the front door jimmied open, and called state police. That son later received a phone call from a man who said he had the Helms and wanted to exchange them for 50 kilograms of cocaine they believed had been stolen by the elderly couple’s grandson. What the kidnappers didn’t know was that the grandson, Macenzie Helm, 28, and his mother, Michelle Helm, had been arrested by DEA agents a week earlier transporting a duffel bag of cocaine. Quebec police traced the cellphone’s location and found the house in Magog, Canada, where the couple was being held. They arrested four Canadian men on September 29.
* The Canadian men are in court and expected to plead “Sorry.”
* It’s like a Cohen Brothers movie, only with way fewer dead bodies.
* The shocking part? Macenzie Helm was hiding the duffel bag of cocaine up his butt.
* Thanksgiving is going to be awkward at Grandma Helm’s house this year.
