(All days repeat annually on today’s date unless otherwise noted; days may or may not be called “National”/”International”/”World” depending on source; sources listed often have additional info. We generally do not list special days which were created by commercial companies for the purpose of marketing, or the hundreds of disease awareness listings which occur each year.)
AMERICAN BUSINESS WOMEN’S DAY
The Holiday Insights website says this:
“Business Women’s Day recognizes the value and contribution of women in the business world. The roots of this special day go back to the late 1940s. While men were off fighting World War II, women filled the void in the workforce. The returning soldiers found the women eager to have their men return. But, many women were not anxious to return to traditional roles in the home. Since then, women’s roles and contributions in the workforce have grown and evolved. Ladies, have a Happy Business Women’s Day! Origin of Business Women’s Day: Hilary A. Bufton Jr. and three Kansas City business women founded the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) on September 22, 1949. The first Business Women’s Day was celebrated in 1982. In 1983, a joint Congressional resolution was passed, and signed by President Ronald Reagan proclaiming September 22 as Business Women’s Day. President Ronald Reagan also issued Proclamation 5532 on American Business Women’s Day, in 1986.”
ELEPHANT APPRECIATION DAY
The Holiday Insights website says this:
“Elephant Appreciation Day is today. Show us how much you care about elephants. This is a big, elephant sized day. We feel it should be celebrated in a big way. Little kids and big kids are fascinated by elephants. In a zoo, in the circus, or a wildlife special on television, elephants captivate us by their sheer size. Today is your chance to let them see that you appreciate them. Showing your appreciation for them starts with a visit to your local zoo. They will be happy to see you. Making a donation towards their support, is a great way to show your appreciation. Here’s a neat suggestion … Show elephants at your local zoo how much you love them, by serving them a special treat. They like pumpkins! They like big pumpkins.”
HOBBIT DAY
The National Day Calendar website says this:
“Hobbit Day is the birthday of the hobbits Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, two fictional characters in J. R. R. Tolkien’s popular set of books The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. In the books both Bilbo and Frodo were said to be born on September 22, but of different years.”

CONTESTANT WALKS OFF “DANCING WITH THE STARS” REHEARSALS DUE TO STRIKE
Actor Matt Walsh (“Veep”) has walked off “Dancing With the Stars,” which is set to premiere this Tuesday, Sept. 26, as a result of the Hollywood writers strike. The two-time Emmy nominee said, “I am taking a pause from Dancing with the Stars until an agreement is made with the WGA. I was excited to join the show and did so under the impression that it was not a WGA show and fell under a different agreement. This morning when I was informed by my union, the WGA, that it is considered struck work, I walked out of my rehearsal. I have been and will always stand with my union members of the WGA, SAG and DGA.”
* “The United Auto Workers, not so much.”
* He was ready to waltz right out of there, but he walked because of the whole strike thing.
* Well, it’s too bad because so many fans wanted to see him compe— wait, who is this guy again?
* So somebody actually gets paid union wages to write the words, “And now James and Jenna will be dancing the cha-cha to ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.'” Nice gig if you can get it.
* This could be just the break the “Dancing With the Stars” main camera-man’s been waiting for.
* Why not? He’s just as unknown as the other contestants.

USELESS THINGS YOU HAVE MEMORIZED
Reddit asked, “What is the most useless thing you still have memorized?” Some of the responses:
– “Roma tomato produce code 4087.”
– “Our phone number when I was 6 years old in 1948.”
– “My friends from high school birthdays. I look at the calendar and I’m like, oh today’s it’s his/her birthday. And I haven’t spoken to these people for years.”
– “Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, select, start.” (it’s a video game cheat code)
– “The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe. Had to memorize it in high school still know it 35 years later.”
– “5th grade we could memorize the Gettysburg Address and the Preamble for the Constitution for extra credit. Those will never leave my brain.”
– “When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking.”
– “A former coworker’s coffee order… It’s been at least 10 years since I worked with him. It was a quad venti peppermint mocha .”
– “The Girl Scout Law, in Swedish. I am American. I do not speak Swedish. It was something we did to earn a badge.”
– “All the words to We Didn’t Start the Fire.”
– “The first 6 Mughal emperors – Babur, Humanyun, Akbar, Jehangir, Sha Jahan and Aurengzeb. I used to use those names to gauge if I was too drunk and needed to go home. If I couldn’t name them, too drunk. Go home.”
* Oops, I just remembered… I have to go to traffic and weather.
* PHONE TOPIC: What useless thing do your listeners have memorized? Have them call and recite it. Make a talent show out of it.

FLORIDA WOMAN STEALS ALLIGATOR FOR BIRTHDAY PICTURES
A Florida woman was cited for stealing a baby alligator and keeping it in her bathtub for a photo shoot. According to the incident report, 25-year-old Madison Stephan stole the alligator from her former workplace, Croc Encounters, a wildlife park in Tampa, and was keeping the alligator in her bathtub at the Grove Resort and Water Park in Winter Garden, Florida. She wanted to use the two-footer as a prop to take pictures for her birthday. While Croc Encounters decided not to pursue charges, the woman was charged with misdemeanor unlawful possession and transportation of an alligator.
* And that’s today’s episode of “What Is Wrong With You People?” Thanks for listening.
* The picture taker said, “How old are you, honey? Hold up the number of fingers you have left.”
* Hey, Croc Encounters! New revenue stream!!
* 25 years old and she can’t Photoshop?
NAKED MAN AT DALLAS-FT WORTH AIRPORT
A naked man was strolling through Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport Monday evening about 10:15 p.m. Authorities said that they arrested the man and took him into custody for a mental health evaluation. Police did not say if the unclothed man was charged.
* He may not have been charged, but he was shocking all the same.
* The reason for the mental evaluation was, come on, why would ANYBODY want to be in Dallas-Ft. Worth?
* People said, “Look at that hangar,” and they weren’t talking about airplanes.
* It did make going through security much quicker.
* And he only had one bag.
* “Snake on a Plane”?
* It’s AIRport, not BAREport.

WOMAN BUYS RESTAURANT LOBSTER, DROPS IT IN THE OCEAN
A Swiss woman touring Sardinia, Italy, paid nearly $200 for a lobster dish at a restaurant only to release the animal back into the ocean. According to the restaurant owner, the lady and her husband entered the Gente di Mare restaurant and saw the lobster tank. She asked the owner if a lobster could be released into the sea. She said she wanted to perform a kind act. So she ordered the $200 Catalan-style lobster with linguini dinner, but took the live 4-pound lobster, gave it a couple of pats, leaned through the railing and dropped it into the ocean.
* The lobster then turned around and said, “I shall grant you three wishes.”
* And she wished that her husband would share his dinner, for she now had nothing to eat but a lousy side dish of linguini, and maybe some breadsticks.
* And then she wished she could get the fish smell off her hands.
* Of course, the restaurant’s lobsters are locally sourced, so it’ll be back in the tank within 48 hours.
FAKE BELLY BUTTON STICKERS A HIT IN CHINA
Belly button stickers are now all the rage in China. Women are using them as a way of making their legs appear longer. Young women are paying around $1.50 for a sheet of temporary tattoos designed to look like belly buttons. The stickers are placed a couple of inches above the real belly button, which is then concealed with high-waisted skirts or pants, in order to make the torso seem shorter and the legs look longer. Belly button sticker manufacturers are struggling to keep up with demand, and social media platforms are being flooded with video tutorials on how to use them.
* So there’s a new Outie factory in China?
* Why not just glue on a little lump of Pay-Doh?
* Is this also causing a shortage of crop tops?
* Sounds like China doesn’t have much of a navel reserve.
* I can’t believe the Chinese are ahead of us in belly button technology.
* It’s a cute story, but don’t take your eye off the ball – they still wanna crush us.

ELTON JOHN SELLING ATLANTA CONDO
Elton John is selling his home in Atlanta, Georgia, a condo that he’s owned since 1991 in the city’s upscale neighborhood of Buckhead. He says now that he’s done touring, he no longer needs a home in that part of the U.S. The condo is listed for $5 million. It’s got four bedrooms (a master and three guest suites), seven bathrooms, a massive walk-in closet that holds at least 100 pairs of shoes, a “two-story grand salon” with floor-to-ceiling windows, a gym and a spa. Elton was introduced to Atlanta after he’d first gotten sober through his partner at the time, Hugh Williams. When asked by the Atlanta Journal Constitution in 1998 why he bought the property, he said “It’s because people here have always been that nice to me … I’ve always been welcomed.” Elton still has homes in Los Angeles; Nice, France; Windsor and London, England; Venice, Italy; Toronto, Canada; and others. “More is good,” he told Architectural Digest in a 2000 interview.
RINGO FALLS ON STAGE
Beloved and almost ageless performer Ringo Starr fell onstage at a concert in Albuquerque Wednesday. (* Aww – a falling Starr!) The former Beatles drummer, 83, began to jog to his microphone when he stumbled to the ground during “Give Peace a Chance.” But, being a spry 83, he popped back up on his own and joined his All-Starr Band for the chorus of “Give Peace a Chance.” He told the crowd, “I fell over just to tell you that.”
