TODAY IS …
(All days repeat annually on today’s date unless otherwise noted; days may or may not be called “National”/”International”/”World” depending on source; sources listed often have additional info. We generally do not list special days which were created by commercial companies for the purpose of marketing, or the hundreds of disease awareness listings which occur each year.)
CLICHE DAY
The Quirky Marketing Calendar says this:
“How many times a day (or an hour) do you find yourself ‘grasping at straws’ to find the right words to use? Is your use of cliches in everyday speech ‘all over the map’? How about your writing? Are you writing about ‘the business at hand’ or are you doing a ‘brain dump’? Well if you are bothered by the overuse of cliches by you or anyone for that matter, remember ‘the buck stops here’ and you can use all the cliche’s you want to today! That’s right! Today is Cliche Day and it is perfectly acceptable to ‘beat the street,’ ‘knock it out of the park,’ and ‘think outside the box,’ for the next 24 hours. And yes, there is ‘a light at the end of the tunnel’ for cliche day is only 24 hours long. ‘Tomorrow is another day!’ You can ‘wipe the slate clean,’ but for today, ‘the ball is in your court!’”
HOUSEWIFE DAY
The Holiday Insights website says this:
“Housewife Day recognizes the importance of stay-at-home wives and moms. Also referred to as ‘Retro’ Housewife Day. These wonderful, caring creatures build and enrich strong family environments. They help to instill family values and good character. Housewife is an old term. It hails back to the days when one income could support the family in a manner of comfort. It was also a time when women did not have equal rights. While these days are long gone, women’s views of working or staying at home fall on both sides of the fence. The decision to be a ‘housewife,’ or stay at home mom, is still preferred by many. Unfortunately, income needs often necessitate going to work. Today, we celebrate and thank all of the ladies who choose to stay home and tend to the house and family!”
SANDWICH DAY
The Holiday Insights website says this:
“We invite you to bite into your favorite sandwich, for today is Sandwich Day. The sandwich is truly a great creation. Sandwiches are a daily luncheon staple for millions of Americans. The Creation of the Sandwich: The annals of English history report that John Montagu was the 4th Earl of Sandwich. Among other things, the 4th Earl of Sandwich was a heavy gambler. Montagu often spent many long hours in London’s gambling parlors. In 1762, he created the sandwich, by putting meat between two pieces of bread. This allowed him to remain at the gambling table for long periods of time. Obviously, the sandwich was named after him. Celebrate this special day by eating sandwiches at every meal! Consume your favorite sandwich. Better yet, be bold and daring … try a new sandwich! PS: Don’t forget to wash your hands first. Happy Sandwich Day!!!”

NORTH DAKOTA POISONING DEATH TURNS OUT TO BE OVER AN INTERNET SCAM
An unusual murder case in North Dakota has taken a strange turn. A man named Steven Edward Riley Jr., 51, claimed he was named beneficiary of a $30 million inheritance. He also said he was going to break up with his ladyfriend, 47-year-old Ina Kenoyer. As Mr. Riley was heading to the Minot, North Dakota, airport on September 3rd to go claim his inheritance check, he fell ill and died two days later. Police arrested Kenoyer, saying she had poisoned him with anti-freeze. Now, according to Ryan Riley, the victim’s 21-year-old son, the couple had unwittingly fallen victim to an online scam and there never was any money. According to Ryan, his dad received an email from a person who claimed to be a lawyer for an unknown “distant relative” and organized to meet him at Minot Airport to sign off on the cash. But, says the son, the supposed lawyer never showed up. It was a scam: “It was a stranger who managed to trick my dad into believing it was true.” Kenoyer told investigators she was entitled to some of Riley’s inheritance as his common-law wife. However, North Dakota does not recognize common-law marriages, so her claim would have been dubious from the start.
* It’s like I keep telling you wannabe murderers: Do your homework!!
* Fortunately, she has a Nigerian prince who says he will bankroll her defense.
* What was the scammer hoping to get from this guy who had nothing? Bus fare?
* The further tragedy here is the waste of good antifreeze in North Dakota.
* Killing someone with antifreeze. That’s cold.
VALET TAKES LUXURY CAR ON JOYRIDE, GETS CARJACKED
A guy drove to Baltimore, Maryland for a date night. He arrived at the upscale waterfront Pendry Hotel in his pretty new Audi RS7 and left the keys with the valet service. Instead of parking the car, the valet took the car on a joyride to a nearby convenience store for a car meet. That’s where, the valet said, three guys jumped into the car, flashed a handgun and stole it from him. The police later recovered the car outside an apartment building and took it to the impound lot. The car’s owner, Brian Eller, was awakened by the hotel manager with the bad news. When he went to retrieve the Audi, he found it severely damaged: The front bumper was partially ripped off, the front suspension collapsed and the door panels battered. Eller says, “The doors don’t open. There’s a full can of gas spilled in the car.” The valet was charged for the car theft while the other thieves are still at large. Mr. Eller was offered a free stay at the Pendry hotel as compensation.
* Oh, the poor guy. He’s stuck in Baltimore.
* That BMW’s in better condition than I’ve gotten a car back from valet parking.
* Something tells me they’re never going to find those “three other guys” because they don’t exist.
* “Gone in 60 Seconds 3: Totaled in Six Hours.”
* Other than that, how was the guy’s date night?
