TODAY IS …
(All days repeat annually on today’s date unless otherwise noted; days may or may not be called “National”/”International”/”World” depending on source; sources listed often have additional info. We generally do not list special days which were created by commercial companies for the purpose of marketing, or the hundreds of disease awareness listings which occur each year.)
BEVERAGE DAY
The Holiday Insights website says this:
“Beverage Day is a chance to kick back with your favorite beverage and enjoy the day. The term ‘beverage’ is broadly defined. So, we’re talking about celebrating all beverages today. Beverage Day should be a day of pleasure and relaxation. Grab a bottle, can, a glass, or a six-pack of your favorite beverage. Sit down in a comfortable chair … indoors or out. Slowly sip and savor your drink. Life is good! BE BOLD! Take advantage of Beverage Day to try a beverage that you have never had before.”
INTERNATIONAL NO DIET DAY
The Holiday Insights website says this:
“International No Diet Day encourages us to appreciate the bodies we have. You could consider it a ‘big’ backlash against becoming little (thin) people. This day is intended for us to appreciate the body we have. It encourages us to recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes … and that’s okay. Anti-diet groups exist to assist and support people who suffer illnesses like anorexia, in their efforts to shed fat and be thin. In addition to anorexia, other medical problems can result from taking diet pills, and surgeries, such as stomach stapling, to control weight. International No Diet Day is a good opportunity to reassess and evaluate your weight management goals and perspective, and to make certain your efforts to be thin don’t come at a risk to your health. If you decide that continuing your diet is right for you, then use today to take a one day break. International No Diet Day was created by Mary Evans Young in 1992. Mary is the director of the British group ‘Diet Breakers.’ After personally experiencing anorexia, she worked to help people appreciate themselves for what they are, and to appreciate the body they have.”
NATIONAL CREPES SUZETTE DAY
NATIONAL NURSES DAY
The Time And Date Website says this:
“National Nurses Day is celebrated annually on May 6 to raise awareness of the important role nurses play in society. It marks the beginning of National Nurses Week, which ends on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale.”
NATIONAL TOURIST APPRECIATION DAY
The Holiday Insights website says this:
“National Tourist Appreciation Day – if you are a tourist today, expect to be pampered. But, wait a minute. As a tourist, you should be pampered every day, period. Vacations are too infrequent, and too far in between. When you go away on vacation, and spend good, hard earned money, you expect and deserve to be treated well. You have earned (and are paying for) the right to be coddled, pampered and attended to. You can, and should expect hotels, restaurants, attractions, and other tourist venues to do this day up in a big way.”

ENTERTAINMENT & CELEBRITIES
NO FELONY CHARGE FOR DAVE CHAPPELLE’S ATTACKER
The man who attacked Dave Chappelle during a performance at the Hollywood Bowl Tuesday will not face felony charges despite carrying a replica pistol with a folding knife blade affixed to it. The Los Angeles District Attorney declined Thursday to file felony charges against Isaiah Lee, 23, who was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after he tackled Chappelle, although the weapon was in his bag when he attacked. They have referred the case to the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office for misdemeanor filing consideration. The D.A. issued a statement: “After reviewing the evidence, prosecutors determined that while criminal conduct occurred, the evidence as presented did not constitute felony conduct.”
* So people are becoming meaner and less tolerant, and also more sensitive and understanding.
* No felony charge but, just like Will Smith, I bet they give the guy an Oscar.
* Also, the New York Jets have expressed an interest in signing the guy for Right Tackle.
* Maybe this is the new entertainment version of giving someone “the hook.” If you’ve been on too long or you’re bombing, they send a guy out to tackle you.
PHIL MICKELSON LOST $40 MILLION IN FOUR YEARS GAMBLING
A new biography of golfer Phil Mickelson claims he lost a staggering $40 million gambling between 2010 and 2014. Alan Shipnuck, a former golf reporter for Sports Illustrated, has a Mickelson biography coming out later this month titled, “Phil: The Rip-Roaring (and Unauthorized!) Biography of Golf’s Most Colorful Superstar.” In a book excerpt published on the Fire Pit Collective website, Shipnuck cites documents that were compiled when government auditors conducted a “forensic” analysis of Mickelson’s finances during the time he was embroiled in an insider trading case involving famed professional gambler Billy Walters. The author did some calculations comparing what Mickelson was earning during that period – the prime of his career – and what he was paying to his agent and staff versus what he reported during the forensic analysis and concludes the money was probably spent on gambling.
* “Probably”. What are the odds on “probably”?
* Remember, “Unauthorized Biography” means you have to fudge a lot of stuff ’cause the subject doesn’t want to have anything to do with you.
* Can you really say you “lost” $40 million gambling when, obviously, it brings you such joy?
* Wow – it’s like I’m reading a story about myself. I must lose $10 a month on stupid lottery scratchers.
U.S. NEWS
FAMILY BROUGHT 6-YEAR-OLD ALONG ON 26-MILE MARATHON RACE
The family of a 6-year-old boy who was allowed to race in a marathon are receiving heavy criticism. Kami and Ben Crawford, of Bellevue, Kentucky, say their 6-year-old son joined their family of eight in the Flying Pig Marathon, held last Sunday, May 1, in Cincinnati, Ohio. The boy’s inclusion in the 26.2-mile race was allowed despite marathon participants needing to be at least 18 years old. The family crossed the finish line together at just over 8 hours, 36 minutes. Children in the Crawford family have raced in at least 33 marathons. The Crawfords reported in a social media post during the race that the boy was “struggling physically” around the 20th mile and needed to sit every three minutes. But they promised him two sleeves of Pringles, which helped push him to the finish line. The parents said the boy was not forced to run, and they did not see signs that he was suffering from heat exhaustion or dehydration. They wrote, “Yes there were tears, but the amount of his crying is comparable to what we would have experienced had we stayed home on a Sunday morning.” The parents have previously snuck their kids into marathons, thereby avoiding age limit rules.
* On the other hand, the kid finished the race Number One in his age class.
* Besides, the long run builds up the kid’s stamina for his night shift in the coal mines.
* Did we mention that since it was an 8-hour race, they made him wear diapers?
* I’m sure Pringles was happy to be name-dropped in this story. “Pringles: Makes child abuse less unacceptable!”
* Next time, could you just give the kid some roller blades or a scooter?
MAN ARRESTED FOR FORESKIN RAGE
A 28-year-old Florida man was arrested Wednesday for allegedly battering his ex-boyfriend during a predawn confrontation about circumcision. Police report that Kyle Perez woke up his 37-year-old ex-boyfriend at 5:15 AM and complained about him “not having any compassion for [Perez’s] desire for uncircumcised penises.” Investigators noted that Perez, who apparently is circumcised, screamed at the victim for having no compassion for “mutilated genitals.” Perez allegedly struck the man in the face, causing visible injuries. When officers arrived on the scene, Perez allegedly admitted that he and his ex-boyfriend were arguing over circumcision.
* Uh… struck him in the face with what, exactly?
* Was he attacked because he was intact?
* What a dick move.
* Sheesh… boys ‘n the hood, amirite?
* Arrested, huh? Makes you wonder if this will become an issue in prison.
* This is probably one case where the police aren’t looking into it.
PRACTICAL JOKE LEADS TO BIZARRE SHOOTING DEATH
The District Attorney of Hendersonville, North Carolina, has released a final report on how an “ill-fated prank” led to the tragic accidental death of Rachel Buchanan, 19, who was shot and killed last October 20, 2021, by her boyfriend, Chris Shields. Buchanan and Shields were invited to the house of another couple to hang out. At one point, the two men left to go back to Buchanan and Shield’s home down the road for a phone charger. There had been stories of a black panther on the prowl in the neighborhood, so the two men carried guns for their own safety. While the men were gone, the two women devised a plan to play a prank on their boyfriends by hiding outside the house and throwing expired eggs at them. When the women heard the men returning, they bent down to hide. At this point, Buchanan’s friend, Autumn Nichols, “passed gas” which caused both of the women to start laughing. The men heard the laughter but perceived it as panther growling and sticks breaking. They saw a dark figure and naturally assumed it to be a black panther. In North Carolina. That no one else had actually seen. Both men proceeded to fire multiple rounds in the direction of the shadowy figure. After the screaming started, both men immediately dropped their guns and ran to help. They found Buchanan laying on the ground and unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds. The District Attorney is calling the shooting and killing of Rachel Buchanan a tragic and heart-wrenching accident, saying, “No criminal laws were violated by either participant in this shooting.” Everybody involved tested negative for any impairing substances in their bloodstream.
* All the same, there was not enough oxygen getting to these guys’ brains.
* Hmm. Not silent, but pretty deadly.
* This story brought to you as a public service by Beano. Beano: prevent gas before it starts.
* So who’s at fault here? The guys with the guns, the non-existent black panther, or maybe the bean salad that woman ate before hiding in the bushes?
* Well, we sure took the long way around, but I think the takeaway here is, always carry an extra phone charger.
INTERNATIONAL NEWS
FLIGHT RETURNS BECAUSE CO-PILOT WASN’T FULLY CERTIFIED
A Virgin Atlantic flight heading from London, England to New York’s JFK Airport turned back to London after it emerged the first officer hadn’t completed the airline’s final flying test. The plane was around 40 minutes into the journey on Monday when what was called a “rostering error” (* scheduling screw-up) emerged, leading the flight to turn around and return. According to Virgin Air, the first officer had joined the company in 2017 and is qualified in accordance with UK flight regulations, but needed to complete the airline’s internal “final assessment” flight, the statement said. In addition, the flight’s captain, who’s “highly experienced” and has been with Virgin Atlantic for 17 years, did not have the designated trainer status, so the first officer was replaced with a new pilot. The company said both pilots were fully licensed and qualified to operate the aircraft, and the pairing did not not breach aviation or safety regulations, but the situation was not compliant with Virgin Atlantic’s internal training protocols.
* Sounds like somebody got sent to detention.
* Boy, that’s a lot of jargon to say the co-pilot wasn’t qualified to be in that plane.
* I’m sure there’s was a lot of “DON’T TOUCH THAT!” happening in the cockpit on the flight back.
* “Final assessment.” I just don’t think you should use the word “final” when talking about flying.
