(All days repeat annually on today’s date unless otherwise noted; days may or may not be called “National”/”International”/”World” depending on source; sources listed often have additional info. We generally do not list special days which were created by commercial companies for the purpose of marketing – including “holidays” created by the National Day Calendar and Wellcat websites to drive traffic to their websites – or the hundreds of disease awareness listings which occur each year. We present only those specially designated days we feel your listeners would find most interesting or significant.)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU DAY
The Ibiblio website says this:
“‘Happy Birthday to You’, the four-line ditty, was written as a classroom greeting in 1893 by two Louisville teachers, Mildred J. Hill, an authority on Negro spirituals, and Dr. Patty Smith Hill, professor emeritus of education at Columbia University. The melody of the song ‘Happy Birthday to You’ was composed by Mildred J. Hill, a schoolteacher born in Louisville, KY, on June 27, 1859. The song was first published in 1893, with the lyrics written by her sister, Patty Smith Hill, as ‘Good Morning To All.'”

ANNA WINTOUR STEPS DOWN FROM VOGUE MAGAZINE
Magazine “legend” Anna Wintour stepped down as editor of Vogue magazine on Thursday after 37 years in which she was often hailed as the single most influential figure in the fashion world. She will no longer run day-to-day editing of the fashion bible, but will continue to hold senior roles at the group. Wintour, 75, was famous for making Vogue’s front covers an authoritative monthly statement on contemporary fashion, and for her total control over the glamorous pages inside. She spent big money on models, design and photographs, and was a fixture in the front row at catwalk shows. She was the inspiration for “The Devil Wears Prada,” a hit 2003 novel and 2006 movie, in which Meryl Streep played the role of a tyrannical magazine editor.
* And yet her favorite outfit to relax in was a pair of jorts.
* This could be the big break Harper’s Bazaar has been waiting for.
* I don’t know if I’ve ever heard a news story that affects me less than this one.
* She was the most influential figure in the fashion world, yet women still wear mom jeans, men wear ball caps and kids buy their clothes at Hot Topic, so… job well done?
THE BUZZ
IN THE YEAR 2065…
What do you think the future holds? A survey of 2,000 Americans from LevLane Advertising examined predictions for the next 40 years. Here is what people think will be happening 40 years from now:
– Retirement won’t be an option for most people in 40 years. 25% of respondents don’t believe retirement will be financially possible.
– Of people who don’t currently own a house, only 35% believe they’ll ever own property. A quarter (25%) expect to rent for life.
– Americans predicted the average home will cost $682,120 in 2065. That’s $272,020 more than today’s average.
– Survey respondents estimate people will work closer to 30 hours or four days per week by 2065.
– Twenty percent hope to travel the world and space.
– Society will be run by 100% digital currency. There will be biometric payment methods, like paying with a fingerprint or iris scan.
– Households will be managed by smart home AI.
– There will be robot roommates, housekeepers, and caregivers.
– People will have implanted health monitors.
* I don’t know about that, but I do know that “Grey’s Anatomy” will still be on, and nobody will still be watching it.
* Sounds like we’re going to solve the whole climate change thing – so that’s nice.
* And in 2065, we will be just 5 years from flying cars.
* And I believe that bottle of tomato chutney will still be in my refrigerator in the year 2065.
* “There will be robot roommates, housekeepers, and caregivers.” Uh, they forgot a category – unless “caregivers” means more than I think it does.
U.S. NEWS
HURDLER WINS RACE DESPITE WARDROBE MALFUNCTION
American hurdler Chris Robinson had an embarrassing wardrobe mishap at the Golden Spike track meet in Ostrava, Czechia, on Tuesday. He was running in the 400-meter hurdles, about 250 meters into the race when his, uh, manhood decided to join the race. It flopped out of his shorts. Throughout the rest of the race, the 24-year-old could be seen repeatedly adjusting himself in an attempt to rectify the issue, all while sprinting his way over the hurdles. Despite colliding with the final hurdle and continuing to fiddle with his diddle even at the wire, Robinson managed a spectacular forward lunge to win the event with an impressive 48.05.
* Is that centimeters, or are we talking seconds?
* Here’s a guy can win a race even when he’s just hangin’ out.
* He won the trophy, and lot of phone numbers from ladies in the stands.
* Professional sports – it’s where you show the world what you got.
* Good thing he wasn’t running the baton relay, that could have turned tragic.
INTERNATIONAL NEWS
JEWELRY STORE EX-MANAGER SENDS SELFIES WEARING STOLEN DIAMONDS
A former manager of a jewelry store in the Humberside region of England was arrested for theft after posting selfies wearing stolen merchandise and sending them to her coworkers. Lucy Roberts, 39, often took jewelry home with her, telling coworkers she was “sorting the stock.” Then Roberts quit and went on vacation. She began sending her former coworkers selfies from a cruise, wearing the jewelry she had taken from the shop. Police found $170,000 worth of jewelry – diamonds, gold, silver and cash – strewn around her home. This week, a judge sentenced her to 28 months in prison.
* “I’m not stealing it if I tell you I’m taking it.” Is that how that works?
* She took the jewelry home to “sort the stock” – one pile to take back to the store, the other pile to keep.
* “Do these earrings match my orange jumpsuit?”
* Imagine going from a cruise right into prison. Not much of a change, really.
ANCIENT BOOMERANG DISCOVERED
Scientists have discovered what may be one of the oldest boomerangs in the world, hidden in a Polish cave for tens of thousands of years. The discovery at Obłazowa Cave in southern Poland is forcing researchers to rethink the timeline of human technological advancement during the early stages of modern human expansion into Europe. While boomerangs are typically associated with Aboriginal Australians, this find suggests that early Europeans were independently developing similar complex throwing weapons during the Ice Age. Carved out of mammoth ivory, found alongside human remains, the boomerang could date back as far as 42,000 years ago, making it significantly older than previously known examples of this hunting tool.
* It’s so old, you can barely make out the “Wham-O” logo on the back.
* They know it’s a boomerang because the skeleton had a bunch of bumps on his head.
* Dang – I knew a good boomerang joke but I don’t remember how it goes. But it’ll come back to me.
* The archeologists are pretty excited, because they think they’ve also uncovered a 42,000-year-old Slip-n-Slide.

SEAN COMBS TRIAL: THURSDAY, JUNE 26
Here is what happened at Sean “Diddy” Combs’ sex-and-drug trafficking trial on Thursday:
– The prosecution delivered its 5-hour (!) closing argument. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christy Slavik urged members of the jury to “use common sense” to determine that Combs used his business empire as a criminal enterprise.
– In her summary, Slavik reviewed travel itineraries for sex workers who were flown out across the country for Combs’ “freak offs.” Interstate transportation or workers for prostitution points towards the charge of sex trafficking.
– She reviewed the testimony of his former girlfriend Cassie Venture, saying Combs exerted control over her as both her boss and her sexual partner — he told her what to do and refused to take no for an answer. When she refused, he would beat her. Slavik said that Combs transported Ventura across state lines and international borders, harboring her at various places where “freak offs” took place. Ventura testified that she never engaged with sex workers without drugs. Slavik told the jury that Combs plied her with drugs, beat her, threatened her and forced her to perform sex acts with escorts despite her shame over it all.
– Slavik said Combs’ young assistants “didn’t blink an eye” and did whatever it took to make him happy during their employ — even if it meant facilitating crimes.
– Combs’ defense lawyers are expected to deliver their closing argument on Friday.

Today’s Birthdays grade: Today’s standouts include an action-sci-fi director/producer whose films have made billions, and the first 21st century Spider-Man. But unfortunately we also have a Kardashian. Personally, we have strong feelings about everything the Kardashian phenomenon represents, but it’s not fair to let Khloe bring down the whole group so here’s what we’ll do – Grade: We Abstain!
[Want to try something different with the daily birthdays? Try grading them! Some days have “good” celebs, some have “great” celebs, some have “lousy” celebs. For fun, give the group an arbitrary grade: A-plus through F-minus. Sidekick will give you our take on it; you can to take the concept and run with it.]
BIRTHDAY QUOTE QUIZ – Ask your listeners “Who said it?” HINT: Today’s their birthday!
