ELEPHANT ALERTS ZOO TO DROWNING ANTELOPE
An elephant helped rescue a drowning antelope at a zoo in Guatemala City last month. The antelope had fallen into a pool of water at Zoológico La Aurora and began to struggle. As zoo visitors watched, the elephant, ‘Trompita,’ stood next to the pool, trumpeting repeatedly and pointing her trunk at the struggling antelope drowning in the water. Trompita’s caretaker then jumped into the pool and made several tries to lift the frantic antelope high enough that it could get its footing and it finally climbed over the ledge out of the pool. The zoo honored both the keeper and Trompita for their role in the rescue on Wednesday. Trompita got some peanuts, watermelon and carrots as her reward, while the caretaker was given a certificate.
