EASTER: RENT-A-CHICK
Here’s an idea for the upcoming Easter holiday: rent-a-chick. Mariel Barreras has a farm north of Omaha, Nebraska. She’s hatched – or about to hatch – about 50 baby chicks that she rents out for Easter. Families pay $25, and after some instructions on care and feeding, take a little yellow chick home in a cardboard box. Then the families take the chicks back to the farm to grow up and lay eggs. “It gives the community time with chicks during Easter, but they don’t get abandoned after they are no longer cute and cuddly,” Mariel said.
* Peep peep peep…I’d pay 25 bucks to not get any sleep for a week. How about you?
* Peep peep peep, but don’t forget about the poop poop poop.
* For $25, I’d want to not only return it, but come back in another month and have it plucked and dressed and ready for the oven.
* Sorry, but I thought Rent-A-Chick was going in a whole different direction.
* This is a fun idea until the pandemic starts.
* When Mariel talks about being abandoned after they are no longer cute and cuddly, it sounds a little personal, doesn’t it?
* Okay, Mariel: What happened? You can tell us.
