DRUMMERS ARE SMARTER, SAYS SCIENCE

Who’s the smartest person in a rock band? The guy who gets his name on the publishing. But who’s the second smartest guy? The drummer. In a study by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, researchers studied volunteers taking a 60-question intelligence test while keeping in time to a drumstick. They found that those with the best sense of rhythm scored better. Said professor Frederic Ullen, “The rhythmic accuracy in brain activity that is observed when a person maintains a steady beat is also important to the problem-solving capacities measured with the intelligence tests.” Other studies have shown that a good sense of rhythm improves cognitive function.
* They took the test while they were keeping time with a drumstick? Well, at least the science is sound.
* The real test is whether you can keep playing when you’re hammered out of your mind.
* So if you have a complicated problem you’re working on, you might want to get yourself some bongos.
* Which kind of drumbeat makes you smartest? Waltz? Tango? Rockabilly?
