DIRT SERVED AT FUNDRAISER DINNER – May 19

Students at Medomack Valley High School in Waldoboro, Maine, were fed potting soil at a community dinner fund raiser to fight hunger. Students had conducted an experiment in science class where they baked a batch of potting soil to determine the effect of sterilized soil on plant growth. Afterwards, the soil was placed in a baking dish covered with foil and set off to the side of the stove area. That evening, at the Empty Bowl Supper, the oven-roasted dirt was placed on the table with other food items meant for the meal. Three students briefly put some of the soil in their mouths, believing it to be a dessert item, before immediately realizing what it was. The school said it was an accident and absolutely not a prank.
* The flavor was described as “earthy.”
* “What is this? Ground beef?” “No – just ground.”
* The one thing you don’t want to hear after eating at a school fund raiser is, “Hey – where’s my science experiment?”
* Still better than the usual school cafeteria lunch.
