BIKINI BOTTOM CONTROVERSY ROCKS NORWEGIAN BEACH HANDBALL FINALS
Controversy is rocking the women’s European Beach Handball Championships after the Norwegian team said it is being forced to wear bikini bottoms when they would rather wear shorts. Beach handball is one of the more popular sports in Europe. (* Yeah, well so is skittles, so, if you say so.) Female players say that the bikini bottoms are uncomfortable and degrading, and make them feel unnecessarily sexualized. The Norwegian women’s beach handball team had planned on wearing thigh-length shorts in a match Saturday against Hungary to protest the sport’s dress code, even though they knew they would face fines. They backed off on their uniform switch when they said they were threatened with disqualification from the European Beach Handball Championship. According to the International Handball Federation, “Women should wear a bikini where the top should be a tight-fitting sports bra with deep openings at the arms. The bottom must not be more than ten centimeters on the sides.”
* Obviously, this issue requires further, intensive study.
* To get to the bottom of it.
* I’d love to hear the official reason why they have to play in bikini bottoms. Player safety? Easier to launder? So everyone gets an even tan?
* Are they going to force the men to play wearing Speedos?
* This is just going to lead us down the path to where beach volleyball women will want to wear pedal pushers.
