AUDIO: YOU CAN LIVE IN THE PLAZA HOTEL: $39 MILLION

The Plaza hotel is one of the most historic landmarks in New York City. Opened in 1907, the legendary property has starred in movies, inspired the “Eloise” series of children’s books, and long been a favorite of literary icons and actors alike, including Frank Lloyd Wright. Now, you can own a permanent residence there. The Plaza is offering the newly remodeled Astor Suite, which sits on the most coveted corner of the building, facing both Central Park and Fifth Avenue. Spanning 4,284 square feet with three bedrooms and five and a half baths, the suite was recently renovated over a two-year period by designer Steven Gambrel, who commissioned the same team of artisans who restored Windsor Castle to install the woodwork. Now, it can be yours, for just $39.5 million. And, apparently, it’s been for sale without a buyer since February.
* I’d hold out, see if they don’t drop the price by 10 or 20 million.
* Not bad, but you’d think for $39.5 million you wouldn’t have to run down the hall for ice.
* But that price includes a lifetime supply of little soaps and shampoo.
* If we don’t like the color of the walls, can we have it repainted?
* Gee, if you got a roommate you’d each only have to pay a little over $19 million.
* The Plaza just became more historic a few months ago. How many hotels can say they were once owned by a future President of the United States?
* Forget that … how many hotels can claim the Beatles stayed there.
* The most coveted corner of the building? By who? Prostitutes?
* To show you what’s happened to the dollar over the years consider this: The entire hotel was built for 12.5 million in 1907.
