AUDIO: WOMAN HAS HAD HICCUPS FOR 12 YEARS
In England, Lisa Graves, 31, has had the hiccups for 12 years, ever since her 2008 pregnancy. Following extensive tests including electroencephalograms and an MRI, doctors determined that they were caused by a strange side effect of a stroke during her pregnancy. She attempted all the purported cures — eating a lemon, a spoonful of sugar, drinking water, being scared, but nothing has stopped them. While doctors can prescribe Graves medication to relax her diaphragm and prevent her hiccups, she prefers to tough through them, which come about 100 times a day, sometimes all at once. Lisa has accepted her fate, saying, “I think I’m likely to be hiccuping till my grave, but it’s become part of me now.”
* She’s erupted more times than Old Faithful.
* How much soup has she spilled on herself while eating, to the nearest hundred gallons?
* Sometimes, she just sits in the backyard and attracts exotic birds.
* Could be worse. Could be farts.
