AUDIO: THE CHINESE HATE NEW CAR SMELL

Ford Motor Co. has filed a patent application for an odor-removal process that eliminates the new car smell after a vehicle has been purchased. They’ve done this to accommodate consumer tastes in China, where car buyers say they hate the new car smell. More than 10 percent of Chinese drivers have complained about the smell of a new car, and since China is the largest car market in the world, carmakers have taken notice. New car smell is caused by a combination of organic compounds given off by leather, plastic and vinyl, in addition to various chemicals used to attach and seal car parts. The process Ford wants to use to eliminate the smell involves, basically, baking the car until the odor disappears.
* Baking “oven baking”? Or baking “get a bunch of stoners in it and let them get baked”? Because that would definitely eliminate the new car smell.
* They hate the new car smell. This, in a country where three days out of ten the air isn’t fit to breathe.
* Hate the smell inside? Let my Uncle Murray drive it around the block a few times.
* Why not just spray the interior with a Chinese kitchen-scented aerosol? It’s like the smell of walking into Whole Foods.
