AUDIO: SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER WANTS TO BAN MUPPET BOOK

In Marshfield, Wisconsin, a school board member wants to ban a book featuring the Muppets. Marshfield School Board member Mary Carney in July objected to the district’s use of the book “For Every Child a Better World” by Jim Henson in kindergarten classes. The book is part of the district’s kindergarten social studies curriculum. The book, Carney contends, contains drawn images of suffering children living in poverty and violence, including one illustration that shows a child living in a box in the rain. Some people have said they were traumatized after reading the book, according to Carney, who cited online reviews as evidence. “Unfortunately in this world there is a lot of war and strife and poverty; I understand that. I just don’t know how appropriate that is to be teaching that to 5-year-olds.”
* How ’bout if they change it so the kid living in a box in the rain is smiling?
* You know, showing a kid living in a box is strong stuff. But having it be in the rain? That’s just mean.
* Maybe they could tone down the suffering. Show unfortunate kids who are forced to, say, still use a Playstation 2.
* Always quote the internet in an argument. It’s such a great source of logic and reason.
* If she wants to ban the Muppets, she’s gonna love the new transgender kindergarten book: “Dick was Jane.”
* Then there’s the animal welfare book: “See Spot Neutered.”
* And the climate change book: “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, No More Fish ‘Cause the Oceans Are Too Warm.”
* Uh oh. Miss Piggy just called her an “uptight tramp.”
* I knew this was going to get ugly.
* Oh no. Now Kermit just made an inappropriate remark about her sexuality.
* Then Kermit said: “School board member? I’ve got your member right here for you.”
* You ask me this woman should stop this soon. She’s got the Muppets all riled up.
