STUDENT SCOLDED FOR WRITING HER NAME IN CURSIVE
After turning in a homework assignment focusing on vowels, a 7-year-old Kansas girl named Alyssa received a scolding from her teacher. In red pen at the top of the lesson sheet, her teacher wrote: “Stop writing your name in cursive. You have had several warnings.” Alyssa’s mom had taken the time to teach her daughter to write in cursive. A picture of the worksheet was posted on Facebook, and outrage was instant. Hundreds of commenters have shared their opinions, such as:
– “Best of luck to any teacher who writes this on my children’s papers!”
– “What is wrong with today’s school system/society?”
On the other hand …
– “The paper didn’t ask for her signature. The paper asks for her name. Which is supposed to be printed. Let’s reward kids for not being able to follow directions. Idiocracy is coming true!”
– “Although I commend a 7 year old’s advancement, realize that at 7 years old its more important they learn how to print before cursive.”
* “I’ll teach you to advance faster than the other kids!”
* What can they do to the kid? Hobble her hand?
* I can think of two words she can print for the teacher.
* Not only is the student still writing in cursive, but now she’s cursing in cursive.
* Does anyone know what happens to a 7-year-old when something like this becomes a viral Internet story?
* I know what she did wrong. She turned in her homework assignment.
* Never do that. Hey, they can’t correct it, if they don’t have it.
* Now the kid will only use the electronic signature on her computer.
* Sure, it’s stupid – but it’s still a better water cooler topic than North Korea.
* PHONE TOPIC: Is it wrong for a 7-year-old to be writing in cursive?
