AUDIO: HELP WANTED: BEER HISTORIAN
The Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC, is looking to hire a beer historian. Curator Paula Johnson explains that the new position is funded by the Brewers Association and that the museum is seeking someone who can “focus and dedicate efforts towards research, documentation, and collecting American brewing history.” Johnson says the Smithsonian has collected food history for many years, and now they are curious about the craft beer movement. The beer historian job is a three-year appointment.
* The successful candidate will be working very closely with the Curator of Pretzels and Beer Nuts.
* Beer historian? I can never remember more than three beers ago.
* It’s a three-year appointment at which point the bartender will give you a “Last call.”
* Sometimes the bartender adds, “You don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here.”
* Then there will be an eleven-person commission to study the differences between having a beer gut and just being fat.
* This will be done in association with the museum’s Tavern Pool League Hall of Fame.
* Finally, the museum will hire a separate historian to study wet t-shirt contests.
